Depleted squad, Kruse trains individually

There were just thirteen players present at Tuesday’s Werder Bremen training session. This was due to the fact that many of the Werder first team are currently away on international duty. In preparation for the friendly match against VfB Oldenburg on Wednesday, head coach Alexander Nouri brought in three U23 players to first-team training to boost the numbers.

Delaney and Bargfrede join in full training

Just six days separate last week’s game with Darmstadt 98 and this Friday’s game with Bayer Leverkusen. As a result the race against time to be fit for those with small knocks is also limited. Therefore, news of certain players returning to training ahead of Friday’s game with Leverkusen is definitely pleasing to hear.

Kainz gets his reward

+++ Special praise from the coach: Florian Kainz needed just two minutes on the pitch on Saturday against RB Leipzig to register his first Bundesliga goal. The Austrian came close to getting his first goal in the top division last week in Leverkusen, but he was denied by Bernd Leno and had also been flagged offside. Head coach Alexander Nouri praised ‘Kainzi’ for his all-round performances in the...

Pancakes on the captain

A 34th minute thunderbolt had everyone on their feet in the Weserstadion on Saturday afternoon. After a cross from Robert Bauer, Leipzig clearance attempt ended up at the feet of Zlatko Junuzovic and the skipper didn’t hesitate to hammer home a lovely strike with the outside of his foot. It wouldn’t be the last goal from an Austrian that afternoon. “That three Austrian’s score the goals in a 3-0...

"The game that we'd hoped for"

Werder are now unbeaten in five matches after the 3-0 win over RB Leipzig and have taken 13 from a possible 15 points. Today’s win over the second placed side in the Bundesliga was the most convincing of the last five matches. “We played well and were solid at the back,” said head coach Nouri after the win. Sporting director hailed the recent success of the team after a third clean sheet in the...

Werder put three past second placed Leipzig

Werder continued their great run of form with a 3-0 win over second-in-the-table Leipzig. The Green-Whites extended their unbeaten run to five matches in a packed Weserstadion. In a first-half dominated by the away side, stand-in captain Zlatko Junuzovic fired in a superb half-volley from outside the box to put Werder 1-0 ahead. In the second-half, Florian Grillitsch rifled a shot into the top...

Nothing alike

SV Werder’s recent results give hope, but the table standings tell a totally different story. Despite the Green-Whites’ run of four games without a loss ahead of the duel with RB Leipzig on Saturday (18/03/2017 15:30 CET), they sit level on points with Wolfsburg and Hamburg SV, the latter of which is currently occupying the last relegation spot. “We’re still in danger of going down, one look at...

Waiting on Kruse

+++ Green light?: Max Kruse was unable to take part in training on Wednesday due to a muscle strain in his thigh, making his participation in tomorrow’s game with RB Leipzig uncertain. “There is definitely hope that he will be given the green light” said coach Alexander Nouri on the potential involvement of his attacker on Thursday. The boss could be more confident on the inclusion of Thomas...

Special match, special place

With Werder, Davie Selke made the step up to the Bundesliga. Between 2013 and 2015, the centre-forward scored nine goals in 33 league appearances for the Green and Whites. In the summer of 2015, he switched to the then second division side RB Leipzig. On Saturday, the U21 Germany international is set to return to return to the Weser Stadium for the first time in nearly two years. This time,...

"We rewarded ourselves with the equaliser"

The images in the wake of Felix Wiedwald’s last minute penalty save in the BayArena were ones symbolic of character. The whole team ran to its keeper and celebrated the deserved point away from home. “That was pure elation, they were all grateful to me and were so pleased,” said Wiedwald on the final few moments of the game.

Wiedwald secures point

Werder Bremen stretched their unbeaten run to four games after a 1-1 draw away at Bayer Leverkusen. Werder’s goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald was the hero of the day, saving an Ömer Toprak penalty which turned out to be the last kick of the game. Kevin Volland had given the hosts the lead after seven minutes but Werder were the better team for long periods, without creating a clear cut chance. It was...

Kruse: “We have a long way to go”

The joy of winning still hasn’t worn off after a few days. Max Kruse’s brace, his first in Werder colours, propelled them to victory on Saturday. “It was a great moment. The euphoria hasn’t worn off yet,” said Kruse in a conversation with WERDER.DE. His goals meant that SVW picked up their third win on the trot, a small but crucial streak – and Kruse sees this no differently.

Nullify Bayer's impetus and extend run

“We need to have impetus against Werder,” that will be Bayer Leverkusen’s aim according to their new coach Tayfun Korkut. Korkut’s opposite number, Alexander Nouri, is well aware of the potential threat that may come as a result of the change in coach. “The players will definitely have a fresh impetus because of the change of coach,” warned Nouri ahead of the clash with the Rhinelanders and added,...
