García trains with ball, Pizarro individually

Werder began their preparations for Saturday’s game against TSG Hoffenheim on Tuesday. Two players were missing from training, however, as Claudio Pizarro trained individually indoors and Jaroslav Drobny missed the session because of a private appointment. Left-back Santiago García was back doing individual ball work as he steps up his recovery from injury.

Play with ease, but don't let up

It’s official. Werder are staying in the Bundesliga. Thanks to the 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin, the Green-Whites have ensured another season in Germany’s top division. The interviews after the game were on a different, however: Europe. Kruse, Bartels and co. helped Werder move up to sixth in the table today and suddenly, the prospect of European football next season seems a little more plausible....

Werder’s unbeaten run ends in Cologne

SV Werder Bremen’s eleven match unbeaten run was brought to an end after they lost 4-3 away to 1. FC Köln. Werder found themselves 2-0 down after goals from Anthony Modeste and Leonardo Bittencourt but were back on level terms before the break after two goals in the space of four minutes from Fin Bartels and Theodor Gebre Selassie. Yet the home side were not done for the first 45 yet and struck...

"No one would have thought it"

Zlatko Junuzovic remembers exactly what was said a little more than two months ago. Werder sat 16th in the table and had a meagre 16 points to their name. “A lot of people thought at the time that we were down, that we would be relegated,” said Junuzovic looking back. You can tell by the way the vice-captain speaks that he takes an enormous amount of satisfaction from the fact that things turned...

Togetherness and intent

Things couldn’t really be going much better for Werder at the moment. The Green-Whites currently occupy sixth place in the Bundesliga and will be trying to defend this position on Friday evening in Köln (20:30 CEST). Despite the recent success, no one is getting ahead of themselves. Everyone knows how difficult the remaining games will be as Werder push for a European place. “We have to give...

An unstoppable duo

Max Kruse and Fin Bartels have known each other for seven years. In 2010, they played together at St. Pauli, before following different paths, only to be reunited again last summer at Werder Bremen. For several weeks now, the striking duo have looked unstoppable together and their goals have played a major role in Bremen’s comeback this season. “They are playing really well together,” acknowledged...

Werder won their second to last home game of the season to stretch their unbeaten run to eleven matches. The Green-Whites eased to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin in front of 42,100 spectators in the Weser-Stadion and moved to within one place of Hertha in the table. I’m very hopeful for the future

From Austria to the Osterdeich – more than just the dialect changed for Florian Kainz when he moved up north. The winger has finally become a core component of Werder’s squad since the turn of the year, and he’s found form as of late, with two goals and three assists over the last six Bundesliga games to his name. Kainz has arrived!

More a chance than a requirement

Just where are those Werder eyes looking at the moment? Well, certainly not downwards after last week’s 4-2 win over Ingolstadt. Now on the 40 point mark, the Green-Whites have achieved their season aim of avoiding relegation somewhat easily and with seventh place suddenly within reach, it’s natural that fans and players can start dreaming.
