Third home game of 2018

The third home match since the winter break takes place this Sunday in the Weserstadion at 18:00 CET. It is an extremely important game for both sides with Werder looking to follow up their away victory against Schalke with their first three points at home in 2018. Naturally Wolfsburg will also be looking to prevent the Green-Whites from doing so. What a match-up we have in store.

"It could have been such a good night"

It wasn’t to be! Werder Bremen gave Bayer Leverkusen a real cup fight, took an early 2-0 lead, continued to create chances and pushed the team currently second in the Bundesliga all the way. The quarterfinal was however to be Werder’s final stop in this season’s DFB Pokal, after Leverkusen mounted a comeback and won 4-2 in extra time. "It’s a painful defeat," said Frank Baumann after full time.

Bellarabi snuffs out Werder’s Berlin dreams

It wasn’t meant to be. Despite a committed Werder performance, they were knocked out in the quarter finals of the DFB-Pokal against Bayer Leverkusen. The Green-Whites’ cup run is over after a 4-2 loss after extra time against the team second in the Bundesliga. In front of 25,653 people at the BayArena, two quick-fire goals from Max Kruse (4’ pen) and Aron Jóhannsson put SVW in a brilliant position...

Back in the starting line-up

"They are really important points for us"

Johansson chips it to Eggestein, who pokes the ball past the onrushing Fährmann and he is taken out by the Schalke ‘keeper. Red? Penalty? No! Werder score the winner. Junuzovic keeps on running and slides the ball home from 3 yards out in the dying seconds to get the decisive goal. 2-1. Ecstasy on the pitch and in the Werder end. The Green-Whites celebrate the first three points of the year. These...

Junuzovic wins it for Werder in stoppage time

A win in stoppage time! SV Werder came from behind to beat FC Schalke 04 away from home 2-1. Zlatko Junuzovic scored the winner in the third minute of stoppage time. SVW went into the break behind after a tough first half in which a shot from Yevhen Konoplyanka, which slipped through Jiri Pavlenka’s fingers into the net, gave Schalke the lead (24’). In an action-packed final 15 minutes, Max Kruse...

Werder's new-signings are available for Saturday

Two new options. Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Werder were able to secure the services of 21-year-old Milot Rashica. The eleven-time national player might even slot straight into the Werder XI. “Milot is a super player, who will help the team right away. He will definitely be in the squad for the Schalke game and may even start,” said Kohfeldt on his plans for Rashica in the...

The Royal Blues, currently third in the table, will enter the game as favourites, coming up against a Green-White team, however, desperate to reward themselves for some top performances of late with three points on the road.

Clean sheets in defence but goal droughts up top

+++ Tight at the back: “The reward for what we showed was much too small,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said after the 0-0 draw against Hertha BSC. Every Werder fan would agree with Kohfeldt’s summary which was spoken from the heart. Despite the frustrating point, two days later, one can say that it was a really good performance from the Green-Whites and one that surely will be finally crowned with...

No three points, no pats on the back

In the dying moments of the match, Maximilian Egggestein must have thought he’d just won it, and it would have been a well-deserved victory, before Hertha sickeningly managed to clear his shot off the line. Consequently there was real frustration and disappointment when the game ended 0-0. A draw that in no way reflected the balance of play.
