Werder pass a test of patience

There are several happy Werder players on Matchday 29: Goalscorers Davy Klaassen and Theodor Gebre Selassie, returnee Yuya Osako, debutant Stefanos Kapino. Nevertheless, SC Freiburg were a tough opponent – as expected. “Eventually it was a test of our patience,” said Maxi Eggestein. It took a long time before SVW broke the deadlock. Davy Klaassen eventually headed home in front of a sold-out...

Second-half headers send Werder sixth

It was a hard-fought win. SV Werder eventually defeated SC Freiburg 2-1 at the Weser-Stadion. It looked as SVW would have to settle for a draw after a goalless first half, however Davy Klaassen broke the deadlock with a header (76’), before Theo Gebre Selassie sealed the win two minutes later – meaning that Werder ended the day in sixth, thanks to Wolfsburg losing 2-0 in Leipzig.

Intense running and being flexible

Run hard, intense, selfless – These three words can be used to sum up the playing style for the game against SC Freiburg. Christian Streich’s team is full of players who will never give up. “They compensate a lot from how much they run and their organization,” warned head coach Florian Kohfeldt. Werder fully felt the force of Freiburg in the first half of the season as they were only able to get a...

A good time

Johannes Eggestein can’t remember the exact time that he decided to extend his Werder contract: “It was a process. I noticed towards the end of the Hinrunde that I was getting more and more appearances, starts too, and I’d got myself a place. That’s not easy for young players and it’s a good step to manage that.”

Another point towards Europe

Werder ended their Englische Woche with a 1-1 draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The game was not the Green-Whites’ best performance of the season, and Florian Neuhaus put the hosts ahead just after half time. Werder changed things and scored the equaliser through Davy Klaassen (79’). The point leaves Werder still in the hunt for Europe, sitting two points behind Wolfsburg in sixth. ...

Mr Omnipresent and his assistant

The title “Omnipresent” pretty much perfectly describes Max Kruse’s importance to SV Werder: the captain has been directly involved in 10 of the last 11 goals scored by the club. Kruse scored a brace against Mainz 05 and produced a fabulous assist for the first goal of the game. “He’s in his best form in years, he’s really fit, makes a lot of runs and is just everywhere,” said Ludwig Augustinsson...
