The Last Eight Take Their Places

On Thursday evening, the final four ties of the last sixteen in the UEFA Cup were decided. The round had some spectacular games to offer from which Espanyol Barcelona, Benfica Lisbon and FC Sevilla all progressed from Iberia with AZ Alkmaar from Holland making up the final particpant at the quarter final stage.

For the first time since the 1999/2000 season, Werder Bremen have reached the quarter final stage of the UEFA Cup. In the second leg of the last sixteen knock-out round of the tournament, the Green-Whites eliminated Spanish league strugglers Celta Vigo winning the home leg 2:0 (0:0).

Almeida's Late Show Puts Werder In The Driving Seat

Werder Bremen took first blood in their UEFA Cup last sixteen first leg tie, beating Celta Vigo 0:1 in Spain. It was an evenly matched game in front of a paltry 9,236 spectators at the Estadio Balaídos during which Werder had the better of the play but it took until the 86th minute before substitute Hugo Almeida popped up with a winner.
