Frings sets sights on second spot

This was one comeback that the Werder fans had been very eagerly awaiting. Torsten Frings was back on the pitch for a Bundesliga game for the first time since match day eleven of the current season.

Werder Bremen played out a 1:1 draw on the 25th Bundesliga match day away to Arminia Bielefeld. In front of 25,800 spectators, Oliver Kirch put the home side in front early on (15’) and it took a 70th minute penalty, converted by Diego, for the Green-Whites to draw level on the day.

The Werder players went into training in highly motivated fashion on Friday ahead of their up-coming Bundesliga clash with Armenia Bielefeld. The sight of Ivan Klasnic returning to the fold will have raised trainer Thomas Schaaf’s spirits and gifted the coach with a further alternative up front. Klasnic himself stated: “I am fit!”

Niemeyer returns for the reserves

Peter Niemeyer was back in the Werder Bremen squad for the first time last Sunday as they took on VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. On Thursday evening, he eventually got a chance to show what he can do on the pitch as the Werder reserves took on Wolfsburg’s second team in the ‘Regionalliga-Nord’ – and it was to be a comeback draped in glory.

Schaaf hopeful of Frings return

Torsten Frings could be about to return to the Werder Bremen team, just in time for the vital closing phase in the Bundesliga. Trainer Thomas Schaaf has not cancelled out the possibility of giving Frings a run-out as early as this Sunday.

Petri Pasanen extends until 2011

On Thursday afternoon, Petri Pasanen prematurely extended his contract with Werder Bremen. The Finnish international agreed terms with general manager Klaus Allofs to keep him under contract at the club until 30.06.2011.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, 18.03.2008, the UN general secretary Ban Ki Mon called up Willi Lemke to become ‘UN Special Adviser for Sport’ in the service of development and peace. The chairman of the Werder Bremen board was delighted about the honour: “I am very happy. It is an unbelievable acknowledgement.”

Daniel Jensen suffers groin strain

Daniel Jensen has been ruled out for the immediate future with a groin strain. On Sunday, 16.03.2008, the Danish international had to be substituted against VfL Wolfsburg as early as the 40th minute. It is momentarily unclear as to when the midfield man will be able to return to the team.
