Fitness test in the rain: The EURO finalists are back

Werder’s EURO 2008 finalists are back. On Monday morning, Torsten Frings, Clemens Fritz and Per Mertesacker began training at the Weser Stadium. The trio began with a fitness test, just as their colleagues had 18 days previously, and started out with some laps of the track in familiar Bremen drizzle.

Four pre-season friendlies, four wins: Werder survived a tough test on their return journey from Norderney and narrowly beat third division Kickers Emden 2:1 (0:1) in Leer-Loga.

On the final day of the training camp he rewarded himself for his performances and helped Werder maintain their positive run in pre-season friendlies with a brace of goals. Martin Harnik was ‘Man of the Match’ in Sunday’s clash with third division Kickers Emden.

Schaaf’s Norderney conclusion: “The team are harmonising”

After a week-long stay, Werder Bremen left their training camp on Norderney yesterday. Trainer Thomas Schaaf drew a generally positive conclusion: “Along with the days in Bremen before we came here, we have been through a good programme. The team were concentrated and are harmonising. The new lads are fitting in well.”

July 6th, 2003: In Firrel, East Frisia, a then fourth division BSV Kickers Emden took on Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly. Angelos Charisteas and Nelson Valdez got the goals for the Green-Whites as they ran out 2:0 winners.

Diary – Day 4: Wide eyes and flapping tongues

Norderney – the island with no seasons! Is it spring, autumn, maybe even the beginning of winter? There is certainly no sun!! Instead a heavy cloud of rain is constantly present, hanging over the island – a situation which surely kept many possible spectators away from Thursday’s friendly against Fortuna Köln.

Diego’s Olympia dream still an issue / Allofs arrives on Norderney

The wishes of a number of professionals from various clubs in the Bundesliga to head off and take part in the Olympic Games in Peking is still an issue at the training camp on Norderney. General manager Klaus Allofs, who arrived on the island on Thursday, commented on the situation.

“Heavy Legs” carry Werder to 3:1 win over Fortuna

Third pre-season friendly – third win. Werder Bremen had little trouble in securing a 3:1 win against one of Germany’s more historic clubs, Fortuna Köln. Despite the rain on the island of Norderney, 3,500 fans made their way to the ‘Sportplatz an der Mühle’.

Two injured strikers, but no need to worry

On Wednesday, striker Hugo Almeida returned to the training camp on Norderney and will go through a rehabilitation programme there over the coming days. The 24 year old Portuguese international briefly left the island on Tuesday to return to Bremen, where a detailed medical examination revealed a muscular injury.

Homeward bound: Almeida to be examined in Bremen

The muscular problem in his thigh, which Hugo Almeida began to feel during the warm up for the first training session on Norderney, has still not subsided. After a consultation with the team doctor, Dr. Götz Dimanski, the striker left the island on Tuesday afternoon and returned to Bremen for a more intensive medical examination.

DFB Cup: “The Dream Draw” - Werder in Nordhorn on Saturday, 09.08.08

On Tuesday, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced the exact dates for the games in the first round proper of this season’s DFB Cup. Werder Bremen will play their game at non-league Eintracht Nordhorn on Saturday, 09.08.08 at 3:30pm at the ‘Stadion am Heideweg’.

Diego not released for Olympic Games

Werder Bremen’s Brazilian international Diego has not been released in order to play at the Olympic Games in Bejing and, on Monday morning, he joined the rest of his team mates as they headed to Norderney for their second training camp.

Werder win 5:0 in Oldenburg

There were a mere 18 hours between Werder Bremen’s first pre-season preparation game in Otterberg and their second when referee Peter Hatzler got the game against VfL Oldenburg underway, in front of 5,000 fans. Trainer Thomas Schaaf made a number of changes to his side with only captain Frank Baumann, central defender Naldo and Daniel Jensen in the starting eleven.

The Werder Bremen players had to patiently wait a full eight days before they got to play their first pre-season friendly match. For some of those involved, the game against Ottersberg wasn’t just the first game ahead of the new season, it was the very first game for the Green-Whites.
