Game against Leverkusen to take place behind closed doors

The DFL decided on Tuesday that Werder Bremen’s upcoming game against Bayer Leverkusen will take place behind closed doors due to a guideline that states no public gatherings with 1000 or more spectators. The match on Monday 16th of March 2020 will take place with no fans from either side present.

“It feels like a loss”

An emphatic start to the game wasn’t enough in the end for Werder to pick up their first win in six Bundesliga matches. Despite the early 2-0 lead, Florian Kohfeldt’s side were unable to keep up their performance from the first 20 minutes for the rest of the game. “It feels like a defeat. We definitely dropped two points today,” said Kohfeldt after the final whistle.

A point in Berlin

The Green Whites made a blistering start to the game, with early goals from Josh Sargent (3’) and Davy Klaassen (6’), however Niklas Stark’s headed goal shortly before half time (41’) laid down the foundations for Matheus Cunha to grab the equaliser midway through the second half (60’). Overall it was an entertaining battle between the two sides, involving an overturned penalty decision with the...

Speed up the process

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt is still yet to fully digest Wednesday’s defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter final of the DFB Pokal. A big result in the league would certainly help the team to quickly get over what was a frustrating evening for SVW. In order to achieve this against Hertha BSC on Saturday (15:30 CET) the Green Whites will have to take their developments of the past few...

Pavlenka out with a muscle strain

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt will have to do without his first choice goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka for the time being as he suffered a muscle strain in the DFB-Pokal loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, he reported in the press conference on Thursday.

Toprak out with calf wound

After being taken off during yesterday's DFB-Pokal quarterfinal match with a suspected fractured fibula, Werder defender Ömer Toprak spent the night in the hospital. Fortunately for the defender, the injury was not as serious as initially thought. The 30-year-old suffered a laceration on his calf following a foul from Frankfurt's Filip Kostic.

“We lacked that final push”

Werder's DFB-Pokal run has come to an end, after a 2-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. After getting off to a slow start in the first half, Werder delivered a strong performance with Davie Selke and Maximilian Eggestein both coming close to scoring the opener. "We found our way into the game after 25 minutes, and created a few clear-cut chances for ourselves. We were in the game, until we conceded...

Out in the quarter final

The DFB Pokal has been the silver lining on a dark cloud for Werder so far this season, however their journey ends in the quarter final of the competition after falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt. Andre Silva opened the scoring from the penalty spot with the final kick of the first half, before Daichi Kamada sealed the victory in the 60th minute. Filip Kostic was shown red...

"Logical progression"

When the Werder players take to the pitch on Wednesday evening, the Round of 16 tie against Dortmund won’t be fresh in their minds. The 3-2 home victory over BVB was over a month ago now. However, the prognosis for the quarterfinal against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday (20:45 CET) remains roughly the same. The Green-and-Whites haven’t seen an upturn in their league form since that DFB-Pokal...

Vogt ready for cup clash

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt will have Kevin Vogt available for selection again for the DFB Pokal quarter final against Eintracht Frankfurt. The centre back suffered a knee injury against RB Leipzig two weeks ago and is now ready to return to the first team. “Kevin returned to training on Friday and will be available for the cup game,” Florian Kohfeldt announced in the pre-match press conference. ...

Turning the Olympiastadion Green and White

Davie Selke made his return to Werder a little over a month ago. He hasn’t fully arrived yet, but maybe it’s because he never really fully left either – at least, that’s how he feels. “I feel really at home here. It was a bit like coming home, there are only minor things that have changed,” the striker said on Monday afternoon in the Mixed Zone. In the Bundesliga, the current situation is similar...

“We fought for our position”

The cancellation of Sunday’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt will have numerous consequences. Frank Baumann spoke to the media about the decision, “We understand Eintracht’s situation. Two games in three days isn’t ideal, but also not impossible in my opinion.” A full transcript of the press conference has been collected below.

Optimism is a virtue

Philipp Bargfrede has had an unfortunate start to the New Year so far. The 30-year-old suffered a calf injury during the winter training camp in Mallorca and has been sidelined ever since. However the midfielder has refused to let his head drop and stayed positive, “It’s important to stay optimistic so that you can come back as soon as possible,” he told WERDER.DE. The long wait is now almost...

Filbry extends as CEO of SV Werder Bremen

Klaus Filbry, Werder’s CEO and chairman of the board, has extended his contract with the club. Werder’s supervisory board, under the direction of board member Marco Bode, agreed to an extension with the 53-year-old in November 2019 until summer 2024. “We are pleased to be able to continue working together with Klaus. He has kept SV Werder Bremen on track over the last few years under sometimes...

Déjà vu

A crucial game against Eintracht Frankfurt is next on the agenda for Werder; something Maxi Eggestein has already experienced before. It was all or nothing back in May 2016 when he lined up as a 19-year-old to help his side secure their Bundesliga status on the final day. Almost four years later Eggestein finds himself in another relegation battle, but the midfielder doesn’t want to draw too many...

Füllkrug undergoes more knee surgery

Niclas Füllkrug has had to have additional knee surgery in the past few days, said Werder's head coach Florian Kohfeldt on Sunday. The surgery will not affect the comeback fate of the striker, who suffered knee ligament damage in September - the striker will still not play for Werder again this season.

“It’s really important to stay positive”

Two goals in ten minutes turned out to be enough in the end for Dortmund to take all three points home from Bremen. The Green Whites were disappointed with BVB’s opener after conceding from yet another set piece, and with their failure to put the visitors under any real threat. Werder haven’t scored a Bundesliga goal in front of their crowd since the end of November. “We failed to create any goal...

A task too big

Another defeat for SVW. Despite a brave and determined performance right up until the final whistle, BVB’s attacking power proved to be too much for the Green Whites in the end, securing a 2-0 victory. The first half was largely an even battle, without much between the two sides. Werder made life extremely difficult for the visitors in the opening period, with tactical discipline and a brave...

Awareness instead of confusion

With each matchday that ticks by, Werder have fewer and fewer opportunities remaining to pick up points in the Bundesliga this season. This has caused the pressure to perform on the pitch to increase at the Osterdeich in recent weeks. Werder need to pick up points in order to escape the relegation zone, preferably starting with this weekend’s game against Dortmund. The team are well aware of the...
