“We’re ready!”, Florian Kohfeldt told journalists at a press conference on Friday. The team have moved on from the two defeats in a row: “Before the season we knew that it could happen, so nobody’s letting it affect them.” Instead, full focus is on Saturday’s away game at RB Leipzig (15:30 CET).

Team news: After Davie Selke had to stop training yesterday due to injury, he won’t be available for selection against his old side on Saturday. “He’s got an issue with his thigh that hasn’t been fully diagnosed yet. We’re examining it further,” said Kohfeldt. Niclas Füllkrug continued training this week as he works on his comeback; the 27-year-old has been training individually. “He’s going in the right direction,” according to Kohfeldt. All other plays are fit and available for selection for the trip to Leipzig. Milos Veljkovic is back in the squad after recovering from a thigh injury and both Manuel Mbom and Kevin Möhwald’s suspensions are over.

Awareness and determination

The head coach on the game: Video analysis of the Stuttgart game took a little longer than usual, reports Florian Kohfeldt. “But then, we put it behind us,” he says, pleased with how this week’s training has gone. “There was an especially good tempo and intensity at training yesterday.” That’s why the belief that Werder can win in Leipzig is definitely there – both amongst the coaching staff and the players. “We’re going up against the most in-form side in Germany at the moment, so it won’t be easy, but we’ll go into it with everything we’ve got.” Leipzig’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has a big squad available to him, so Kohfeldt is expecting a highly flexible opponent. He points out two of their main strengths: “Leipzig are the best side in Germany as far as defending counter attacks goes, and then they’re very fluid in their positioning.” It will also be important to line up with the right mentality this weekend. “We need to have that awareness and show determination on the pitch.”

The last match: Werder’s performance last time out against RB Leipzig wasn’t anything they’ll be trying to replicate this time; SVW lost 3-0 in the Red Bull Arena on 15th February 2020. Florian Kohfeldt’s side want to do things better this time.

Break the spell

A short record: SV Werder and RB Leipzig have faced each other in eight Bundesliga games thus far. The Green-Whites have won twice, drawn once and lost five times in the fixture against the team from Saxony. The previous two meetings have seen Naglemann’s side win two games in a row against Bremen for the first time. Florian Kohfeldt’s team are also yet to win away in Leipzig. Saturday is a chance for Werder to take three points on the road against Die Roten Bullen for the first time.

One thing in common: A win would make Kohfeldt’s team the first so far this campaign to take anything from the Red Bull Arena; Leipzig have won all five of their Bundesliga home matches so far this campaign. One thing that the teams do have in common is coming away from Munich with a point. Werder and Leipzig are also the only teams to have scored at the home of the champions so far this season. However, Nagelsmann’s side come into the game in very good form after scoring three in their draw at the Allianz Arena and beating Manchester United to qualify for the round of 16 in the Champions League.
