Just like last Friday’s trip to Wolfsburg, the 2-1 home defeat to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday left the feeling that Werder should have gotten more from the game. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt’ s team led in most of the match stats but emerged from the game with nothing to show for their efforts. “We gifted them two goals,” said Kohfeldt after the game. “We’re currently in the most dangerous phase of the season. We have picked up some good points, but we’ve now lost two games on the bounce which were both unnecessary defeats. We have to maintain our focus.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “In the end we’re very disappointed not to have taken anything from the game. We were the better team in almost all of the measures. We had more possession, more shots on target and won more duels. We also had the best chance of the game after five minutes. We gifted them two goals, which simply shouldn’t be happening. We were also not clinical enough in front of goal.”

Frank Baumann: “We started the game well and we had a great chance early on through Yuya Osako, which he should have done better with. Overall, it was a relatively balanced game though. Unfortunately we were just not decisive enough in key moments and made too many mistakes.”

Davie Selke: “We were completely out of it by the time I scored unfortunately. It was just too late. It felt to me like it was just a matter of time before something went our way, and it’s very frustrating for me that we didn’t get a result in the end.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "We gave Stuttgart two goals. That made the difference today. They were waiting for our mistakes and we made them.”

Tahith Chong: "The details decide the games and you can see that when you look our last few games. We tried everything as a team to turn the game around, especially in the second half. The result is very annoying for me."

On the next few games:

Florian Kohfeldt: We’re currently in the most dangerous phase of the season. We have picked up some good points, but we’ve now lost two games on the bounce which were both unnecessary defeats. We have to maintain our focus. You can slip down the table much easier than you think, so we have to keep giving our all. Who we’re up against doesn’t matter to me, you can pick up points against anyone.”

Frank Baumann: “We have to take it as it is and move on. In Munich we showed that we can keep up with the top sides. We shouldn’t look at our opponents, we need to concentrate on our own performance. We’ll try and improve on our mistakes. We knew that things would be tough this season and that there would be phases where we struggled to pick up points.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "We knew from the beginning that it would be a difficult season. We had a phase in which we picked up points, but we haven’t done that in the last two games. But we have to keep going and aim to get points from every game, even against stronger opponents like Leipzig and Dortmund."

Tahith Chong: "It is crucial for us to stay calm, to keep working on improving our game, and then to give it everything we’ve got in games.”
