Frustrating and unnecessary: those were the two words that best summed up Tuesday’s home defeat to Borussia Dortmund. SV Werder kept the match against the Champions League side open for a long time, but in the end came away with nothing to show for their efforts. “Unfortunately we’ve finished empty handed today, despite deserving something from the game,” summed up scorer Kevin Möhwald. For head coach Florian Kohfeldt, “the goals we conceded were stupid” and ultimately the reason that the Green-Whites come away with no points.

Florian Kohfeldt: “We kept the game open for a long time and I thought we deserved at least a point. The goals we’re conceding at the moment are just stupid unfortunately. There’s no other word for it. In the first half, I thought we did well when we had possession but we didn't manage that in the second half, which annoys me. Nevertheless, the team showed a lot of passion again and tried their best to play good football. Unfortunately, we were a bit toothless in the final third again. These are recurring themes over the past few weeks. We have to do better at creating chances.”

Kevin Möhwald: “Dortmund increased the pressure in the second half, but we were still in a good position. In the end, we concede an unnecessary goal due to an individual mistake. We played with a lot of courage and we have to continue with that, even if that sounds a bit stupid after a loss. We have to keep going and focus on creating more chances. Unfortunately, we’ve come away empty handed today, but we definitely deserved more.”

Ömer Toprak: “We’re disappointed, definitely. It was a difficult game for both teams. We didn't know what to expect with the change of coach at Dortmund. After conceding the opening goal, we came back well and it was an open game. In the end, it's just frustrating that we concede a penalty for the third game in a row, which ended up changing the game.”

Josh Sargent: “We started the game well and fought hard early on. The second goal was very unfortunate, but we have to move on now. This week we have another important game against Mainz and we have to be ready for that.”

Ludwig Augustinsson: “It's very frustrating to have lost this game to a late goal like that. We're conceding goals too easily at the moment but we're not panicking. We're fully focused on the Mainz game on Saturday now.”

On the penalty:

Florian Kohfeldt: "The penalty is just bad luck on our part, and I know Jiri won’t let it affect him. He's one of our leaders out on the pitch and plays a big role in us picking up points."

Kevin Möhwald: "It happens and no one is blaming him. He's saved us points so many times this season already."

Florian Kohfeldt: "We've faced all of the current top four over the past weeks. We had chances in all of these games, and the most one-sided defeat was the one in Leipzig. However, I'm convinced that we will pick up points in the next weeks. Our performances are consistent, we just aren't getting the points we need, but that will come. From the start, our goal this season was to make certain that we stay up. That won't happen by itself, and we need to pick up points. I'm still optimistic that we will be able to do this."

Kevin Möhwald: "We're always alert and have told ourselves that in every game, it's about picking up the points we need to stay up. We're fully in this fight. Now, we have a very important game coming up in Mainz on Saturday. We will have to give it our all once again and get the win."

Ömer Toprak: "We now have a game against Mainz which we're focused on. Today we did several things well, but also weren't as strong in other areas. We will have to analyse this. Then, we will have to make sure that we improve and continue to pick up points."

Ludwig Augustinsson: "We're currently in a difficult situation. Of course we would like to have more points. I hope that we will be able to learn from last season. We need to continue to believe in ourselves and work to improve in order to get some more points on the board."
