SV Werder Bremen and Davy Klaassen are going their separate ways. The 27-year-old midfielder will join Ajax Amsterdam with immediate effect. Both clubs have reached an agreement over the transfer, and have agreed to not release details of the contract.

“It was clear to us that we wouldn’t let Davy go for just any price, but only if the offer met our standards, given that he was a key player for us. That’s now happened. As such, we were able to grant Davy’s wish to join Ajax, and to return to his boyhood club,” said sporting director Frank Baumann.

Davy Klaassen had been a key figure in head coach Florian Kohfeldt’s squad over the last two years. “Davy was a leader for us both on and off the pitch,” Kohfeldt said. “I enjoyed a close relationship with him and would like to thank him for his exemplary behaviour. During his two years at Werder, he always gave it his all in every game and training session. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Davy Klaassen joined Werder in 2018 from Everton, and made 81 competitive appearances for the Green-Whites (16 goals).
