At 07:30 local time on Tuesday, the squad got on the coach in Zillertal and began the journey back home. Despite the very different conditions due to the Coronavirus pandemic, SV Werder’s ninth training camp in Zell am Ziller was a sporting success. “We have to pay Zillertal a great compliment in terms of organisation,” said head coach Florian Kohfeldt at the end of the ten-day camp. “Despite the situation, we almost had a perfect environment for training.”

Alongside the numerous training sessions, Werder also played two friendly matches, against Linz and Lustenau. Yet as the team departs Munich airport for Bremen at around 11:30 CEST, the head coach will also reflect on a sad aspect of the days in Zell am Ziller. “Zillertal is also a place where people come together, where up to 2000 fans attend games or training sessions. That didn’t happen and I really missed it.”

A couple of knocks aside, the squad made it through the training camp unscathed. That was a great improvement on last year, when several injuries disrupted pre-season preparations. “Under the sporting conditions, the training camp was very good,” said Kohfeldt. The only issue was the condition of the pitch, which suffered under sporadic heavy rainfall. The groundsmen, who travelled with the squad, dealt with the problem “as best possible”.

In contrast to the preparations for the restart last season, all clubs are working under the same conditions this summer. That’s the case for the training camps as well as the conditions for training from Freiburg to Bremen and from Dortmund to Leipzig. “We have to accept the Coronavirus regulations as they are and try to get the best out of it in a sporting sense,” said Kohfeldt, who concluded, “we are pleased with how pre-season is going.”
