No more than a long weekend

Werder are in action for the last time on Wednesday night, and then it’s time for the Winter break. But it’s quite different to a long period of rest and recuperation – it’s really just a long weekend. There are ten days between the last game of 2020 and the first of 2021. “It’s shorter than a normal international break,” says head coach Florian Kohfeldt. WERDER.DE provides an overview of the plans for Christmas and New Year.

The break only starts on Christmas Eve. Even if the second-round match against Hannover doesn’t go to extra time or penalties to find a winner, it’ll be a long evening for all involved. Two buses will bring the players back to Bremen overnight, and then they will have post-match treatment and regeneration as well as a coronavirus test.

And business carries on at the wohninvest WESERSTADION on Christmas Eve: those who weren’t in action on Wednesday night will get some attention. Only then does the Christmas break begin – and an obligatory coronavirus test on the morning of the 28th will allow a return to training that afternoon. “So we’re talking about a maximum of three days off,” says Kohfeldt.

Almost all of the players will be spending this ‘long weekend’ in Bremen. No-one will travel abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic. “One or two might spend Christmas night with their parents or siblings,” says Kohfeldt. Theodor Gebre Selassie will be spending Christmas in Bremen for the first time; he usually travels to his home country, the Czech Republic. “Like everything, Christmas is a bit different this year. Obviously I’m a bit sad not to see my family, but it’s something different and we’re looking forward to a couple of days off,” says Gebre Selassie.

The head coach is also looking forward to a few days when everyone takes a break. “It’s just a really short break, but the Christmas break is sometimes more relaxing than the summer one, because everyone has the time off. Typically, no-one comes to work for those three days, and I hope it’s the same this year too.”

Florian Kohfeldt has five days of training with his side ‘between the years’, when he can focus again on the Bundesliga and the first game against Union Berlin on 2/1/2021 (15:30 CET) in the wohninvest WESERSTADION. The final training session before the game is planned for New Year’s Day, when the press conference should also take place. By that time, the peaceful Christmas days will already be long gone…
