SV Werder Bremen continued their winning run in pre-season with a 7-0 victory over BSV Schwarz-Weiß Rehden. Head coach Florian Kohdfeldt’s side made it seven wins from seven friendly matches ahead of the new season, which kicks off with a DFB-Pokal first-round clash against FC Carl Zeiss Jena on Saturday (12/09/20). Against Regionalliga side BSV Rehden, Werder’s seven goals came from four different players: Johannes Eggestein (11’), Davie Selke (24’ 76’ 86’), Tahith Chong (19’ 54’) and Leonardo Bittencourt (27’).

Line-up and formation: Werder lined up with a completely different side to the earlier game against Hannover 96 (2-0, match report here). The team lined up in a 4-3-3 with Simon Straudi, Julian Rieckmann, Milos Veljkovic and Manuel Mbom in the defensive line. Ilia Gruev sat in front of the defense alongside and made up a midfield trio with Leonardo Bittencourt and Kevin Möhwald. Starting XI: Dos Santos Haesler - Möhwald, Selke, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Chong, J. Eggestein, Straudi, Gruev, Rieckmann, Mbom.

Bench: Kapino - Pudic, Nawrocki, Becker.

Match summary: The difference in class was clear between the first- and fourth division sides. Werder were already four goals to the good in the 27th minute and recorded a comfortable victory in the end. However, Scwarz-Weiß never gave in and fought over the whole 90 minutes, even having a few chances of their own. Andreas Golombek’s team came close to a deserved goal but in the end it was a fifth clean sheet from seven for SVW.

Post-match reaction:

Frank Baumann: “You can’t read too much nto pre-season results. They’re superficial when the season really begins. However, after last season, it is good to end this pre-season in good spirits. We have used the time well, a point we focused on was defence. Today, we kept clean sheets in both games.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The pre-season went to plan, but that’s not the important thing. What’s more important is what is coming next. The coming week we will focus on Jena. It is noticeable that we have a range of goalscorers, but also that players like Davie Selke and Johannes Eggestein scored their fifth or sixth goals. Having goals scored by a number of different players in attack is good and is something that we didn’t have last season.
