SV Werder lost a friendly against FC St. Pauli 4-2 after 105 minutes of football. Florian Kohfeldt’s side were unable to assert any real dominance at any stage of the game. Even after pulling it back to 2-1, the Green-Whites were unable to get back in the game. Nonetheless, young players Nick Woltemade and Abdenego Nankishi scored, which was a highlight of an otherwise unsatisfactory afternoon.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt used two different sides in the match of three 35 minute periods. The first eleven, full of Bundesliga players, played the first two thirds, whilst a second side played the last. It was an opportunity for those with less match practice to get some time on the pitch.

Starting XI: Kapino – Möhwald, Rashica, Osako, Moisander, Schmid, Toprak, Chong, Erras, Friedl and Woltemade.

Bench: Dos Santos Haesler – Bittencourt, Sargent, Gebre Selassie, Gruev, Rieckmann, Groß, Nawrocki, Dinkci, Park, Badjie and Nankishi.

Nankishi scores and Toprak injured

It was the visitors who looked to dominate the game in the first 35 minutes, and it was Simon Makienok who surprised by giving them the early lead (16’). The attacker scored with a back-heel, with ex-Werder man Luca Zander providing the assist. SVW’s best opportunity went to Yuya Osako, who was unable to make it 1-1 after going through on goal thanks to a great pass by Tahith Chong. Ömer Toprak sadly had to be substituted in the 30th minute due to injury.

In the ‘second third’, it was a long ball that undid the Werder defence. Lukas Daschner ran through clear on Stefanos Kapino’s goal and gave the keeper no chance to make it 2-0 (53’). Nick Woltemade pulled one back on the hour mark. Yuya Osako found Milot Rashica in the penalty area with a long ball, and he put it in the middle to find Woltemade. The Bremen-born forward found a way past three St. Pauli defenders to make it 2-1. Werder weren’t back in the game for long, though, as the referee awarded the visitors a penalty just a minute later. Boris Taschy sent Kapino the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Florian Kohfeldt changed the whole team in the last third of the game, introducing a few U23s players. Yet the Green-Whites suffered another setback; Igor Matanovic headed a cross from the left to get St. Pauli’s fourth (85’). Youngster Abdenego Nanshiki provided Werder’s highlight of the afternoon as his solo-run past four opposition players made it 4-2 (93’).

Match reaction

Florian Kohfeldt: “We wanted to focus on more technical things today, but I was disappointed from the first third in the lack of hunger and creativity on the pitch. And we weren’t good enough in defending the counter-attack. We need to make sure that we have the balance right. We wanted to set up a little more offensively in this friendly, but it didn’t work. We’ll learn from that. I found the final third really refreshing, on the other hand. Some players really impressed. Ömer picked up a thigh injury which is why he was substituted. We’ll have to wait for more information, but Ömer himself says that it was more precautionary.”

Frank Baumann: “It’s important that we had this friendly today. We could try a few things out in a couple of positions that you can’t do in the Bundesliga. Lots of young players played the last third, and that was good to see. Obviously on the whole though, it wasn’t a good performance. We made too many mistakes and we didn’t have the body language that we wanted to have.”
