SV Werder Bremen finished the year with a commanding 3-0 victory away at second-tier Hannover 96 to advance to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. Two quick-fire goals from Theodor Gebre Selassie and Josh Sargent (29’, 32’) had Florian Kohfeldt’s side two goal up at half time. Following the restart, Werder absorbed a brief period of pressure from the hosts, before Jean-Manuel Mbom sealed the win with his first goal for the Green-Whites (60’).

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made four changes to the eleven that started away in Mainz. Niklas Moisander returned to the starting XI for the first time since the draw against 1. FC Köln at the beginning of November, with Milos Veljkovic slotting in alongside the captain in defence. In addition to this, Jean-Manuel Mbom and Tahith Chong also started after the latter’s decisive assist in last weekend’s late win against Mainz 05. Kevin Möhwald and Yuya Osako dropped to the bench, while Marco Friedl and Ömer Toprak missed out due to injury.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander, Augustinsson, Groß, M. Eggestein, Mbom, Chong, Schmid, Sargent.

Substitutes: Kapino, Agu, Toprak, Erras, Gruev, Möhwald, Dinkci, Osako, Woltemade.

First half highlights:

8th minute: Timo Hübers fails to stop Theodor Gebre Selassie’s cross and the ball falls to Joshua Sargent. The American brings it down on his chest and fires in an effort on goal, but his shot is straight at Ratajczak who makes the save.

27th minute: Ludwig Augustinsson advances down the left-hand side and crosses to the far post where Gebre Selassie is waiting. However, he is unable to keep his shot down and the score remains goalless.

29th minute: Goal for Werder Bremen, scored by Theodor Gebre Selassie! The ball drops to Werder’s right-back again at the far post from an Augustinsson cross. This time he makes no mistake, heading into the left corner to put the Green-Whites in the lead!

32nd minute: Goal for Werder Bremen, scored by Joshua Sargent! Kohfeldt’s team double their lead inside three minutes as veteran captain Niklas Moisander beats four men in the middle of the park before timing a pass to perfection through to the youngster. Sargent keeps his cool and slots past Ratajczak to make it 2-0!

38th minute: Eggestein finds himself in space 17 metres out and takes aim, forcing a great save from the 96 keeper.

45+3 minute: Half time in Hanover with the next round of the DFB-Pokal beckoning!

Mbom seals the win

Second half highlights:

48th minute: Tahith Chong intercepts Hübers’ misplaced pass on the halfway line and breaks through, but his finish is parried by Ratajczak before he puts the rebound into the side netting.

51st minute: Two chances in quick succession for the hosts as Moisander clears a Muroya cross behind for a corner. The subsequent corner is just as dangerous but centre-back Hübers puts his headed effort wide of the mark.

60th minute: Goal for Werder Bremen, scored by Jean-Manuel Mbom! The midfielder plays in Tahith Chong, who beats Falette and pulls the ball back from the touchline to Mbom. It’s a simple finish but an important one – Manu’s first for Werder!

77th minute: A cross from the left, this time from Augustinsson’s replacement Felix Agu, again sails to Gebre Selassie at the far post, but he struggles to take it down and sees his effort miss the mark.

90+1 minute: Final whistle in Hanover, with Werder making the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal!

Conclusion: Bremen dominated the match from the beginning but had to wait for more than 25 minutes before they could break the deadlock. Theo Gebre Selassie struck first with a header to put Kohfeldt’s team ahead after good work from Ludwig Augustinsson before Josh Sargent doubled the lead less than three minutes later. Hannover came out after the restart reinvigorated but the Green-Whites defended well, before Jean-Manuel Mbom sealed the victory following a Tahith Chong assist. A win to finish off 2020!
