Frankfurt is never an easy place to go. Werder were always expecting a tough game, but a brave away performance from Florian Kohfeldt’s team meant that they return to the Weser with another point following the 1-1 draw with the Eagles. The first half was a tactical affair, only remaining goalless thanks to the intervention of VAR to rule out a Frankfurt opener. However, it wasn’t long after half time when Joshua Sargent fired the Green-Whites into the lead (51’). The lead lasted until the 65th minute, when the hosts struck back through André Silva. Adi Hütter’s team piled on the pressure in search of a winner, but ultimately Werder held firm and extended their unbeaten run to five games.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt was forced to change formations after losing Niclas Füllkrug to injury. Tahith Chong replaced this season’s top-scorer so far, while Kohfeldt kept the rest of the side that drew at home to TSG Hoffenheim last weekend.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Friedl, Moisander, Eggestein, Groß, Mbom, Bittencourt, Sargent, Chong.

Substitutes: Kapino, Möhwald, Rashica, Osako, Schmid, Toprak, Rieckmann, Gruev, Woltemade.

Few big chances in the first 45

First half highlights:

3rd minute: A good start for the Green-Whites! Leonardo Bittencourt advances down the left with the ball before sending it into the middle, but Josh Sargent cannot capitalise on the chance.

10th minute: Frankfurt have their first real chance of the game. Daichi Kamada crosses into the penalty area from the left, where Bas Dost connects with the ball but steers it wide of Pavlenka’s goal.

14th minute: Josh Sargent finds himself in space on the edge of the box and lays it off to Manuel Mbom, but the midfielder cannot keep his shot on target.

29th minute: Theodor Gebre Selassie whips a cross into the box but Leonardo Bittencourt can’t get enough on the header to trouble Trapp in the Frankfurt net. The Werder attack is not quite linking up, but getting closer.

34th minute: Frankfurt have the ball in the net and Kamada wheels away to celebrate. However, VAR cuts the celebrations short due to an offside from André Silva in the build-up. The game remains goalless.

43rd minute: The disallowed goal seems to have energised the hosts, but SV Werder are defending well. Steven Zuber aims a cross at Bas Dost, but it sails over everyone in the box and into touch.

45+1 minute: Werder ride their luck on the stroke of half time! Eintracht win the ball in midfield, with Steven Zuber and André Miguel Valente Silva fashioning a chance that forces Jirí Pavlenka into a good save. The play is brought back for a free kick for the Eagles, but it comes to nothing.

A hard-fought second half

Second half highlights:

49th minute: A dangerous start by the hosts! A cross from Almamy Touré lands on the head of André Miguel Valente Silva, whose shot goes close but is parried to safety by Jirí Pavlenka.

51st minute: Goal for Werder! Joshua Sargent hits his first of the season to give the Green-Whites the lead! The American is played in on the left and finds himself one-on-one with Kevin Trapp, finishing cooly at the near post to break the deadlock. The goal is checked for offside, but he timed his run to perfection. Advantage Werder!

57th minute: Close from the loanee! Tahith Chong steals the ball from Makoto Hasebe and sprints towards the Frankfurt net. However, Hasebe is able to catch up and clears for a Werder corner. Unlucky!

59th minute: Werder are hunting for a second! Following a SVW corner, Marco Friedl crosses the ball dangerously to the back post eluding Kevin Trapp, but Christian Groß cannot keep his header on target.

65th minute: Goal for Frankfurt. André Miguel Valente Silva equalises for Eintracht. Manuel Mbom loses the ball softly to Aymen Barkok, who plays in Kamada. He whips in a great ball to André Miguel Valente Silva and the finish is a simple one from the Portuguese.

70th minute: Now the hosts are on the hunt for a second! A cross-field ball finds Bas Dost and the Dutchman strikes the post from an acute angle.

73rd minute: A dangerous counter-attack from SVW! Theodor Gebre Selassie grabs the ball and dribbles forward, before finding Joshua Sargent in the box. The American lines up a powerful effort, but it’s straight at Trapp who can save without too much trouble.

89th minute: David Abraham tries a long distance effort for Frankfurt, but it swings into the middle giving Jirí Pavlenka an easy catch.

90+3 minute: Amin Younes crosses to Bas Dost. The Frankfurt striker’s header is deflected by Niklas Moisander and Jirí Pavlenka parries the ball to safety.

Conclusion: Another hard-fought game and another hard-fought point for SVW! The first half was tactical and took place predominantly in the middle of the park, so big chances were few and far between. The hosts thought they had taken the lead, but an offside in the build-up meant that both sides went into the interval goalless. Shortly following the restart, Kohfeldt’s team were able to take the lead through Joshua Sargent, but it wasn’t long before the Eagles struck back to make it one apiece. Despite the hosts ramping up the pressure, Werder held firm and were rewarded with a point for their efforts after another fighting performance.
