For Werder, Matchday 3 is over after a home victory against Bielefeld, and the international break is underway – meaning a number of players will head away to represent their countries. This time, there will be some restrictions. “The fundamental reason is so we don’t lose players who would have to travel to high-risk areas,” said sporting director Frank Baumann.

Due to the current regulations within the state of Bremen, which require anyone arriving from a high-risk area to quarantine for a minimum of five days, regardless of any test result, SV Werder have informed some international football associations that they will not be making certain players available. As a result, Jiri Pavlenka and Felix Agu will reain in Bremen, while other players will return from international duty at an earlier date, such as Marco Friedl or Ludwig Augustinsson. “Ludwig won’t travel to Russia, but will play in Croatia. Marco will play against Greece, but wont travel to Northern Ireland or Romania,” said Baumann.

The only exception to the decision is Yuya Osako, who will face Cameroon with the Japanese national team in a friendly in Utrecht, Netherlands on Friday (09/10/2020) before completing a period of home quarantine. “As Japan have been unable to play any games for a long time, we reached this arrangement with the Japanese FA,” said Baumann. “It was very important for us that we don’t have to be without any players because of mandatory quarantine for the match against Freiburg.”
