The Christmas break for the Werder players is already over. After head coach Florian Kohfeldt's team were able to take a short breather, they returned to the Osterdeich on Monday for training again. Focus is now firmly on the first match of 2021 at home against Union Berlin. As the team got underway with the last week of training in 2020, Clemens Fritz returned to the wohninvest WESERSTADION and spoke in a digital press conference on a several key topics.

Clemens Fritz on...

…the last two games: “We were all very happy to get two victories. The win against Mainz was crucial for our position in the table and we put in a confident performance in Hanover. It was definitely a deserved win. We're pleased that we have a good range of options in the squad at the moment. It was great to see the younger boys playing well and it gave us all a good feeling going into the Christmas period.”

...the Christmas break and New Year's Eve: "It wasn't really a proper break, more of a short breather really. Our full focus is back on the next game now. It won't be a New Year's Eve as we know it, that’s for sure. It's just a regular week for us and we'll prepare for the game as usual.”

...this weekend’s opponents, Union Berlin: “They're a great team and it'll be a tough test for us. They play confident football and fully deserve to be where they are. It's clear that Max Kruse has a lot of quality, and I'm a bit surprised how well they've coped without him. They’ve shown an incredible physical presence and beaten Dortmund, amongst others. After the win in Mainz, however, we’ll be giving it everything to keep the three points here in Bremen!”

…on the upcoming winter transfer period: “We won't be very active in the window, but we'll monitor what's going on with a view to the summer window. We intend to take all offers seriously. These are difficult times, and we'll decide what makes sense for us and what doesn't as we go on.”

…Johan Mina: “It was up in the air for a while whether the Copa América would be played or not, but it has been cancelled now. Johan will arrive back in Bremen on 7th January and spend five days in quarantine. After that, we hope he’ll return a negative test so that he can return to training with the U23s on 12th or 13th January.”
