SV Werder Bremen has obtained its licence for the 2020-21 season with no conditions attached. The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) announced this on Monday. The exceptions to the coronavirus pandemic decided on the 31st of March by the DFL General Assembly were taken into account.

As confirmed by the DFL, none of the 49 applicants were denied entry to the first step. However, by mid-June some applicants will have to meet certain requirements in order to be eligible to play in the event of qualification, or have been granted the licence subject to conditions. Werder Bremen is not one of those, as the Green and Whites were granted this license without having to fulfil extra conditions.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the following exception has been made in order to determine economic capability: The general assembly has decided that financial criteria in the form of a liquidity assessment will not be conducted this year. The reasons behind this decision were to give all clubs the opportunity and time to cope with the financial effects of the pandemic and to return to regular match operations, in order to have all competitive results decided by sporting means.

Every club which has submitted all the documents for economic capacity assessment within the deadline has thereby fulfilled the criteria. In regard to this, and in line with an integral and fair competition, sporting, legal, personnel-administrative, infrastructural and media-related criteria will also be assessed in the current year. Among other things, these include factors such as each club’s sustainability in promoting youth football, the condition of the stadium and the professional working conditions for the media.
