On Sunday, the Werder boys are back in action. For Florian Kohfeldt’s men, the Zillertal mini-tournament is the first taste of pre-season friendlies, while for the two opponents, this is much more of a dress rehearsal. Karlsruher SC and WSG Swarovski Tirol are deep into their respective pre-season programmes. As has become customary, Kohfeldt will take the opportunity to give as many players in the squad as possible game time during the tournament. WERDER.DE present the opposition.

The clubs:

WSG Swarovski Tirol: The Austrian club was founded in 1930, originally called SC Wattens. After several years of promotions and relegations, WSG Swarovski Tirol, as they are now called, returned to the Bundesliga. For the coming season, the club whose colours are green and white, will play their games at the Tivoli Stadium in Inssbruck, due to their home ground being under construction.

Florian Kohfeldt was still U23s coach last time Werder faced KSC (nph).

Karlsruher SC: KSC’s last stint in the Bundesliga is a long time ago: 2008/09 was the club’s last season in the top flight. Since then, they have even been relegated to the third division – dark days for a club with a considerably successful history. In 1952, Karlsruher FC Phönix and VfB Mühlburg merged to form Karlsruher SC and enjoyed DFB-Pokal glory in 1955 and 1956. Last season, KSC gained promotion back to the second division and are on course for re-establishing themselves in professional football.

The tournament:

A ten day training camp means ten days of strenuous work. Alongside several intense training sessions in the space of 24 hours, Werder will also be playing their first two friendlies. The tournament will begin at 11am (CEST) with the game between KSC and local boys Swarovski Tirol, which will be followed by Werder’s first game against WSG Swarovski Tirol. The third and final game will kick-off at 13:10.
