After eight games without a win, Werder have been set back, but are still not reeling. After the 2-1 home defeat against Schalke, SVW want to, once again, show their mental fortitude and finally get the first win in two months. Florian Kohfeldt seems to have found the right recipe for success in this away match; after recent defeats, the team has to convert their discontent into “aggression” paired with a “belief in their own ability.” The men from the Weser take on the Wolves on Sunday (01.01.2019) at 18:00 CET.

Personnel: The SVW squad remains unchanged for the first time in a long time. After the return of Augustinsson against Schalke, the left back could again play in his preferred position. “He is a candidate to start”, Kohfeldt said in his press conference ahead of the match. The 37-year-old will have to continue to make do without captain Niklas Moisander, who did take part in team training but is not ready to appear in the Bundesliga. Everyone else, apart from the injured Fin Bartels, Kevin Möhwald and Niclas Füllkrug, is on the bus to Wolfsburg.

Kohfeldt is on the hunt for the goal formula

Kohfeldt on the game: in Wolfsburg, Werder take on the best defence in the league. The Werder head coach is expecting a “very physical and aggressive” defensive team, which has an extremely flexible back line. However, Oliver Glasner’s side is not impenetrable. “Of course they take calculated risks at times”, explained Kohfeldt, who went on to clarify their strengths, “they have two very physical centre backs and centre mids, who break up play.” Kohfeldt gave warning sin regards to their “dangerous wide-men”, who track back and attack well. How he plans to reign in the “wolfpack” remains a secret. “We will worry about how we can create chances.” But Florian Kohfeldt wouldn’t be Werder’s head coach if he had no answer to the conundrum.

The last meeting: In the past, Werder have often instilled fear in the Wolves. Last season’s 1-1 was simply a continuation of recent good results. From the last seven games against Wolfsburg, Bremen have taken 17 points of a possible 21 and are undefeated in this period. Yet, this was not apparent in the match in the Rückrunde last season until Max Kruse brought SVW level at 1-1.

Sahin's adventure began in Wolfsburg

Sahin's Deja Vu: For Werder's midfield dynamo Nuri Sahin, the upcoming game at VfL Wolfsburg has a special meaning, as the club gave the then 16-year-old Turkish midfielder his Bundesliga debut on 6.8.2005. To date, he is the youngest ever player to play in Germany's top division. After a last-minute goal, it had been over 14 years since that 2-2 draw. On Sunday then it should be a victory to add a beautiful moment to the memories of the midfielder.

The referee: referee Dr. Robert Kampka from Mainz leads the game. The 37-year-old is supported on the sidelines by Benedikt Kempkes and Frederick Assmuth. Fourth official is Sascha Thielert. The video referee assistants are Christian Dingert and Tobias Christ.
