Unplanned, but an opportunity gratefully taken: Milos Veljkovic has been using the down time in recent weeks to remotely study  Sports Management. The 24-year-old has been attending online courses at the European Sports Management Academy, with the hopes of laying the groundwork for life after football.

“We’re training every day, but we have so much free time because of corona. I want to use the situation productively,” Veljkovic told WERDER.DE about his decision to take up his studies earlier in the year. The Werder centre back attends two to three online lectures per week. His studies will last one year, with an independent study project and a final exam to complete.

The fresh-faced student is hoping to get a few tips from one of his former teammates. “I think I’ll call Zlatko Junuzovic and ask him what comes up on the test,” the Serbian international said. He chuckled as he referenced the fact that Junuzovic, as well assistant head coach Timo Borowski and honorary captain Clemens Fritz, had already complete the very same course.

Milos still hasn’t got any specific ideas about working after the end of his playing career, but this sort of further education will open up a world of possibilities for life after professional sport. Not least due to the wide range of course content; Werder’s number 13 has subscribed to modules on Economics and Management, Marketing, Law, as well as Sport Psychology. Veljokic appeared highly motivated, “it’s interesting and really varied.” So this corona-induced break to normality certainly hasn’t been boring for Milos Veljkovic.
