These are the moments that show just how cruel football can be. SV Werder Bremen played some great football and deserved the win, but ended up with just the one point. Nils Petersen’s 93rd minute equaliser sums up SVW’s current problems. Just like the game against Hertha BSC, Florian Kohfeldt’s side dominated large periods of the game, but fell to a late goal from the opposition. “We shouldn’t sugar-coat it. I’m extremely disappointed because we never learn from our mistakes. We need to improve,” Kohfeldt said after the game.

On the match:

Florian Kohfeldt: “We shouldn’t sugar-coat it. We should’ve closed the game out. I’m extremely disappointed because we never learn from our mistakes. We had the man advantage yet we kept playing the ball long. Why? I need to analyse the game myself first then I will discuss with the coaching team.”

Theo Gebre Selassie: “It feels like a defeat. We defended very passionately; I don’t know how we let that happen. When I scored my goal I was over the moon, but I just wished we scored another one. At the end we only take away a point. It’s incredibly annoying. It’s difficult to take after drawing our fifth Bundesliga match in a row, but we need to pick ourselves up and win the next one.”

Ömer Toprak: “We wanted to win the game but we were far too erratic and unorganised at the end of the match. We didn’t close the game out like we should’ve. Taking the lead twice should be enough. I also take responsibility for the equaliser; I should have done better.”

Milot Rashica: “It was their last shot of the game. We were so close to getting the victory, and had the game completely under control for a long time. Nevertheless, we need to try to look at the positives now.”

Leo Bittencourt: “We’re all really disappointed. We didn’t manage the game well when it was 2-1. That’s something we need to improve on. We really should’ve got the three points today. We had the man advantage and shouldn’t make silly fouls. It’s so frustrating. I’m really sorry to all the fans. Now we have to pick ourselves up and look towards the next game.”

Frank Baumann: “You can feel just how disappointed everyone is. It’s worrying how many games we are drawing. It’s simply not enough. We were nowhere near good enough in the first half. But we did have good phases and should have made it 3-1 when they went down to ten men. We shouldn’t have conceded the goal at the end of the game. It also doesn’t help when you only play well in certain phases. Draws aren’t good enough to achieve what we aim to.”

On Freiburg’s first goal:

Florian Kohfeldt: “I can take responsibility for that. I’ve always said that we should play it out from the back. That sort of thing is likely to happen once or twice a year. Last year it happened in Leipzig, and it happened again today. That’s my fault. It happens.”

Theo Gebre Selassie: “Goalkeepers are mentally really strong. It’s his third season here and only his second mistake. That sort of thing can happen when you play out from the back. He’s very strong.”

Leo Bittencourt: “Pavla has saved us in numerous games. No blame lies with him.”

Frank Baumann: “We wanted to play out from the break and Pavla spent too long on the ball. But I’m not putting any blame on him. We should have given him more options so that he didn’t end up in that situation.”

On their upcoming matches:

Frank Baumann: “We need to look at the team as a whole, not at individuals. Something needs to be changed. We need to put games to bed so that we don’t end up in that situation. We need to improve in all areas of our game.”

Leo Bittencourt: “We need to start picking up the three points. It will be a difficult game in Gladbach, but we have a team capable of posing them a threat.”

Milot Rashica: “I’m happy about my goal and I hope that I can score again next week, but the three points are the most important thing. We need to look at the positives.”
