Fin Bartels will undergo a small operation on his knee this coming Monday. The 32-year-old is likely to be out of action for a maximum of four weeks, as Werder’s head coach Florian Kohfeldt announced on Thursday. “Unfortunately his knee has not yet recovered. It’s not a dramatic operation and he won’t be out for a long time, however, it is of course annoying because it’s another setback for him,” Kohfeldt explained.

In addition to Bartels, Ludwig Augustinsson will also be unavailable for the Green-Whites in their opening game of the season against SV Atlas Delmenhorst. The left-back will return to regular training in the week after the first-round clash in the DFB-Pokal and begin intensive preparations for the Bundesliga opener against Fortuna Düsseldorf. “We have decided that he will first need to continue training and is therefore not an option for Saturday,” clarified Kohfeldt.

Veljkovic no longer wearing protective boot

Werder’s head coach was also able to provide an update concerning Milos Veljkovic and Sebastian Langkamp. “I saw Milos in the changing room today without his protective boot for the first time,” said a happy Kohfeldt. The central defender is now working hard in the rehabilitation stage of his return from a broken toe. “He will gradually build up the intensity,” said Kohfeldt.
A ‘realistic goal’ for fellow defender Lamgkamp’s return could be the away game at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. “We can’t specify a particular date. He will be able to play after the international break,” asserted the Werder coach.
