What a first half! What a game! Werder march on into the round of 16 of the DFB Pokal after a convincing 4-1 victory at home to 1. FC Heidenheim. SVW were all over the visitors in the first half, making them pay with a 3-0 lead after just 18 minutes. Rashica, Bittencourt and Klaassen grabbed the goals for the hosts. Friedl then added a fourth in the 41st minute. Schnatterer pulled one back for Heidenheim from the spot shortly before the break after a controversial handball decision. Despite failing to add to their tally, Werder continued their dominance into the second half, with Sargent and Lang squandering their chances to extend their lead as the Green Whites march on into the round of 16.

Line-up and formation: Werder made three changes to the side that lined up against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga at the weekend. Michael Lang, Sebastian Langkamp and Philipp Bargfrede all came into the side, replacing Thedor Gebre Selassie, Christian Groß and Nuri Sahin. Florian Kohfeldt set his team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Joshua Sargent leading the line.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Friedl, Langkamp, Veljkovic, Lang - Klaassen, Bargfrede, M. Eggestein, Rashica, Bittencourt, Sargent

On the bench: Kapino, Osako, Sahin, Toprak, Gebre Selassie, J. Eggestein, Goller and Woltemade.

The highlights from the first half:

6th minute: The rocket man is firing again! Milot Rashica is in a rich vein of form! 1-0 to Werder! Bargfrede travels with the ball in midfield towards the left-hand side of the penalty area. Werder’s veteran finds Rashica at the edge of the box, who curls it into the far bottom corner. What a start!

11th minute: Werder double their lead! Leonardo Bittencourt scores his first goal in a Werder shirt to make it 2-0, after a swift counter attack. Klaassen finds Sargent deep into the opposition half, who carries the ball forward before playing Bittencourt in to finish from 16 yards.

18th minute: Incredible! Werder lead 3-0 inside the first 20 minutes! This time it’s Davy Klaassen who finds the back of the net. The visitors fail to clear Friedl’s cross and Maxi Eggestein picks up the ball on the right hand-side of the box. The midfielder finds his captain at the edge of the box, whose deflected strike finds its way into the back of the net. Game over?

41st minute: Werder are showing no mercy as Marco Friedl makes it four! Klaassen picks out the fullback’s run, who cuts in onto his right foot before slotting it past the keeper. What a half for the Green-Whites!

45th minute + 1: Penalty to the visitors! A cross hits the hand of Marco Friedl and the referee Daniel Schlager points to the spot. Schnatterer makes no mistake and pulls one back for Heidenheim; 4-1.

45th minute + 1: Half time on the Osterdeich. Almost a perfect first half for Werder!

The highlights from the second half:

50th minute: Schimmer almost makes it 4-2! The substitute for the visitors fires a well-hit cross into a dangerous area and Pavlenka does well to avert the danger.

61st minute: Sargent so close to a fifth! Rashica plays a brilliant cross through to Sargent, but the American fails to connect with the ball and the chance goes begging.

77th minute: Osako comes off the bench and almost crowns his return to action with a goal, but his header narrowly misses the target.

90th minute + 1: There’s the final whistle. A goalless second half however, SVW earn a convincing victory over Heidenheim and move into the round of 16!

Match summary: Werder Bremen take a well-deserved win after a dominant performance, particularly in the first half. SVW delivered a strong second half performance, where they could have had even more goals, after a rampant display in the opening period. SVW fans will be delighted with how their team played and can now look forward to Saturday’s fixture against SC Freiburg.
