The DFB Pokal has been the silver lining on a dark cloud for Werder so far this season, however their journey ends in the quarter final of the competition after falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt. Andre Silva opened the scoring from the penalty spot with the final kick of the first half, before Daichi Kamada sealed the victory in the 60th minute. Filip Kostic was shown red after a nasty challenge on Ömer Toprak in added time.

Lineup and formation: The boss made two changes to the side that lined up against Dortmund ten days ago. Kevin Vogt returned to the starting line up after recovering from his short term knee injury. Maxi Eggestein, who was suspended for the Dortmund clash, also returned to his usual position in midfield. Yuya Osako and Milos Veljkovic were dropped to the bench.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Vogt, Augustinsson, Rashica, Selke, Bittencourt, Moisander, Toprak, Gebre Selassie, Klaassen and M. Eggestein.

On the bench: Kapino, Osako, Veljkovic, Langkamp, Sahin, Sargent, J. Eggestein, Friedl und Woltemade.

The highlights from the first half:

8th minute: Good start from SVW! Davie Selke receives the ball in the middle of the box but his shot on goal is blocked by the defender.

35th minute: Davie Selke with the best chance of the game so far. Leo Bittencourt finds the #9 with a pinpoint cross, however Kevin Trapp dives to make a great save to deny the striker.

42nd minute: Werder are gathering momentum. Bittencourt wins the ball back and finds Davy Klaassen, who lays it off for his midfield partner Maxi Eggestein. Eggestein tries his luck from distance but Trapp is there to make the save once again.

45th minute + 6: Unbelievable. Frankfurt take the lead from the penalty spot. VAR awards the hosts a dubious penalty after deeming Ludwig Augustinsson to have unfairly handled the ball and Andre Silva converts to put his side in front.

The end of the road

The highlights from the second half:

60th minute: 2-0 Frankfurt. Filip Kostic whips in a peach of a cross, finding Daichi Kamada who calmly volleys home to double his side’s lead.

70th minute: Eggestein carries the ball through midfield, finding Milot Rashica at the edge of the area but the Kosovan’s shot is blocked away from danger.

80th minute: Almost a chance for the freshly substituted Yuya Osako, but the ball travels narrowly wide of the Japanese striker.

90th minute + 2: Red card for Kostic. The midfielder is sent off for a nasty challenge on the back of Ömer Toprak’s calf. The defender is unable to continue and is carried off on a stretcher.

90th minute + 10: Full time in Frankfurt. Werder are knocked out in the quarter final of the DFB Pokal.

Match summary: Werder started the game strongly, holding firm in defence and posing a threat in attack. However, the penalty awarded by VAR seconds before half time changed the entire course of the game, as Eintracht Frankfurt strolled to a 2-0 victory in a relatively uneventful second half. Next up for Florian Kohfeldt’s side is a trip to Berlin on Saturday 7th March for the Bundesliga clash with Hertha BSC.
