Werder Bremen are through to the quarter final of the DFB Pokal! The Green Whites advanced into the next round after a spectacular performance against Borussia Dortmund, earning them a 3-2 win. Erling Haaland almost ruined the night after pulling one back in the 67th minute, however Werder’s DFB Pokal specialist Milot Rashica replied instantly to win the game for his team (70’). BVB reduced the deficit again through Giovanni Reyna (70’), however it wasn’t enough for Lucien Favre’s team on the night.

Line up and formation: Yuya Osako, Milos Veljkovic and Marco Friedl all came into the starting XI after Saturday’s defeat at Augsburg. Ömer Toprak and Nuri Sahin were dropped to the bench, whilst Nick Woltemade didn’t make the squad.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Vogt, Rashica, Osako, Selke, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Moisander, Klaassen, Friedl, M. Eggestein.

On the bench: Kapino, Pizarro, Sahin, Sargent, Toprak, Bartels, J. Eggestein, Groß, Goller.

The highlights from the first half:

3rd minute: First chance of the game for Werder! Milot Rashica whips in a cross to the back post, directed at Davie Selke. However the number nine and Maximilian Eggestein’s shots are both blocked, before Davy Klaassen’s effort from outside of the box sails harmlessly over the crossbar.

16th minute: GOOAAALLL! DAVIE SELKE! Marco Friedl wins the ball back deep into Dortmund’s half, laying it off for Milot Rashica. The Kosovan tries his luck from distance, however Marvin Hitz can only parry the ball into the path of the onrushing Davie Selke, who latches onto the rebound and scores his first goal since returning to the club. Shades of his goal against Dortmund back in December 2014!

30th minute: GOOAAALLLLL!! WHAT! A! GOAL! Leo Bittencourt with an absolute screamer! The ball sits up nicely at the edge of the box and the midfielder smacks it into the top corner on the volley. Unbelievable!

44th minute: Almost 3-0! Selke gets himself through on goal and gets the strike away, however Hitz makes himself big in the Dortmund goal and manages to make the save. Werder are an absolute menace on the counter at the moment!

Pure passion

53rd minute: First chance of the half for the visitors. The goal seemingly opens up for Jadon Sancho, however multiple Werder defenders appear on the scene just in time and manage to make the block; Kohfeldt’s men are throwing their bodies on the line! Meanwhile, Davie Selke is forced off due to injury, with Josh Sargent replacing him up top.

67th minute: The visitors pull one back. Erling Haaland comes off the bench and taps in Julian Brandt’s cross on the line. Dortmund are back in it.

69th minute: Pavlenka to the rescue! The newly-substituted Giovanni Reyna gets himself in behind the defence but Werder’s octopus is there to make the save. Phew!

70th minute: GOOOOAAALLLL! MILOT RASHICA! 3-1! Werder restore their two-goal lead. Yuya Osako plays through the deadly winger, who dribbles forward at pace and smacks the ball into the far bottom corner. What a finish!

78th minute: Dortmund strike back again. Reyna scores. The young American bends one right into the top corner from outside of the box to make it 3-2. No chance for Pavlenka this time.

90th minute + 3: Pavlenka is there again! Haaland has a free header from only a few yards out, however the Czech goalkeeper is there to deny him once again! Incredible! And shortly after the final whistle goes! Werder are into the quarter final!

Match summary: A night to remember on the Osterdeich! SVW take the spoils after an exhilarating game of football. The confidence is back, the atmosphere is electric. Werder took a convincing lead into the break after an intense first half, with clinical finishing. Kohfeldt’s team went into the second half with a sensible mentality and managed to keep the visitors at bay for large periods of the game, sealing the victory through Milot Rashica’s strike 20 minutes from time. The win sends Werder into the quarter finals for the third year running and gives them a massive boost as they prepare for another crucial Bundesliga match on Saturday against Union Berlin (15:30 CET).
