Werder Bremen’s opening game at the Interwetten Cup ended in a 1-0 defeat to VfL Osnabrück. The newly-promoted second-tier side were on top in the first 30-minute half on a slick pitch, after a downpour had delayed kick-off slightly. Claudio Pizarro came closest to scoring for the Green-Whites in the first half, while VfL’s Kevin Friesenbichler was able to find the target after 19 minutes. Werder improved after the break and had a good chance to pull level through Martin Harnik, but Osnabrück held out to deny Bremen a comeback in their newly unveiled black alternate kit.

Team news: Stefanos Kapino started in goal for Werder fresh off the back of signing a new contract. Youngsters Rieckmann, Pudic, Wiemann, Goller and Becker were all given a chance by Florian Kohfeldt, alongside the experienced heads of Martin Harnik and captain for the day Claudio Pizarro. Johannes Eggestein also got his first minutes of pre-season following the U21 EUROs.

Starting XI: Kapino - Harnik, Pizarro, Rieckmann, Bartels, J. Eggestein, Pudic, Groß, Wiemann, Goller, Becker

Bench: Karbstein, Sargent, Füllkrug, Barry

Highlights:

19th min: Goal for VfL Osnabrück. The Purple-Whites take the lead through Kevin Friesenbichler. Agu sends a tantalising ball across the face of goal and Friesenbichler applies the finishing touch past Kapino.

25th min: A cross from the left finds captain Claudio Pizarro, but the Peruvian’s header just clears the target.

31st min: Florian Kohfeldt makes two changes at the break, with Eggestein and Becker replaced by Josh Sargent and Malte Karbstein.

34th min: Werder’s best chance so far. Harnik takes a lovely ball over the top of the defence in his stride, only to fire inches wide of the far post.

40th min: Wonderful stop from Kapino! Heider must think he’s scored after sending a square pass goalwards from six yards out, but the big Greek keeper parries the ball away sensationally.

46th min: Pizarro and Bartels make way for Füllkrug and Barry.

60th min: Full time! Werder are beaten 1-0 by Osnabrück.

Summary: A courageous and determined first-half display from Osnabrück sees them claim a narrow but deserved victory. Pizarro, Harnik & Co. didn’t have an answer to the Bundesliga 2 side’s adventurous football in the first 30 minutes and only really found their feet after the interval.
