SV Werder Bremen have their first win of the New Year! It was a successful dress rehearsal for Florian Kohfeldt and his men ahead of their return to Bundesliga action against Fortuna Düsseldorf next weekend (Saturday 18th January). Kohfeldt was happy to see his side make progress as they continue their preparations over the winter break. Werder started the game with a back three, as they did in the first half against AC Monza. However, the visitors initially managed to take the lead through a curling effort from Edgar Prib in the 30th minute. Watched on by new signing Kevin Vogt, Benjamin Goller and Co. continued to attack the Hannover defence but were let down by their decision making in the final third. However, eventually their persistence paid off and a 10 minute brace from Josh Sargent sent the hosts into a half time lead (33’, 43’). It was a very even second half without much to split the two sides, before Michael Esser’s mistake from Milot Rashica’s long-range effort secured the victory for SVW (59’).

Line up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt was pleased to announce a fully fit squad ahead of the friendly against Hannover 96. However it wasn’t quite as simple as that, as six players had only returned to team training during the eight-day winter training camp (Leonardo Bittencourt, Fin Bartels, Philipp Bargfrede, Milos Veljkovic, Ludwig Augustinsson and Michael Lang). All six of these players were left out of the game in order to prevent any further risk of injury. Kohfeldt also elected to give minutes to defensive duo Ömer Toprak and Niklas Moisander, as well as midfielders Maximilian Eggestein and Davy Klaassen. SVW lined up in a 3-5-2 formation.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka,  Rashica, Moisander, Sargent, Toprak, J.Eggestein, Klaassen, Friedl, M. Eggestein, Groß and Goller.

On the bench: Kapino, Osako, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sahin, Rieckmann, Straudi, Gruev and Woltemade.

The highlights from the first half:

15th minute: Werder have started to gain much more control after a difficult start to the game. The Green Whites are staying patient and shifting the ball from side to side in order to find a way through their opponents. The first shot of the game is still yet to come.

20th minute: Two quick-fire chances for the visitors! Hannover have the first shot of the game. Pavlenka is forced into action as he denies both Sebastian Soto and Cedric Teuchert within the space of 60 seconds.

23rd minute: Werder’s “rocket” takes on three, four Hannover players before laying the ball off for Johannes Eggestein in a central position. The young attacker tries his luck with his side’s first shot of the game but his effort is too central.

30th minute: Goal for Hannover. Edgar Prib finds the far corner with a fantastic curling effort from the edge of the area. No chance for Pavlenka.

33rd minute: GOAL! Sargent equalises. Hannover’s lead lasted just three minutes! Maximilian Eggestein plays in Josh Sargent who volleys the ball into the bottom corner. What a goal!

43rd minute: Sargent gets his second of the afternoon! Benjamin Goller finds the American with a pin-point cross, who rises the highest and heads his side into the lead!

The highlights from the second half:

49th minute: Newly substituted Yuya Osako gives the ball away in his own half, which Cedric Teuchert latches onto and manages to round the keeper; however Sebastian Langkamp is on hand to clear the ball off the line.

59th minute: Goal! 3-1! Rashica finds himself with time and space at the edge of the area and tries his luck from 25 yards. His effort is far too central; however Esser fails to control it and can only watch on as the ball trickles over the line.

90th minute: Nuri Sahin hits the bar from a free kick with the final kick of the game. So close!

Match summary: Successful dress rehearsal! SV Werder earn a deserved 3-1 win against Hannover 96. Florian Kohfeldt’s side defended strongly up until the visitors took the lead. However, Captain Niklas Moisander and his team struggled to be effective in the final third; perhaps due to the effects of the intensive winter training camp. Nevertheless, overall it was a good performance for the Green Whites, who return to Bundesliga action next Saturday away at Fortuna Düsseldorf (15:30 CET).
