Werder Bremen will have to wait even longer for their first home win since September 2019. Despite a dominant start to the game, the Green Whites ultimately fell victim to a late winner by the visitors. Wout Weghorst’s 82nd minute header ended up being the only goal of the game as Wolfsburg took the victory, leaving Werder still three points adrift from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the playoff position.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the side that lined up for Wednesday’s defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. Ludwig Augustinsson returned to the starting XI for the first time since the restart. Philipp Bargfrede also returned to the side in central midfield, while Josh Sargent joined Yuya Osako in attack. Marco Friedl, Fin Bartels and Davie Selke were all dropped to the bench. Milot Rashica was unavailable due to an ankle injury. Werder set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Theo Gebre Selassie and Ludwig Augustinsson occupying the flanks.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Veljkovic, Vogt, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Bargfrede, M. Eggestein, Augustinsson, Klaassen, Osako, Sargent

On the bench:  Kapino, Lang, Groß, Langkamp, Friedl, Bittencourt, Bartels, Selke, Woltemade

Pavlenka denies Weghorst – Sargent and Osako come close

The highlights from the first half:

13th minute: Werder have the lion’s share of possession, but the first real chance of the game goes to the visitors. Weghorst pokes it past Veljkovic to get himself through on goal, but Pavlenka is quick off his line to deny the striker.

24th minute: Great attack by Bremen! Eggestein gives it to Klaassen down the right-hand side, who fizzes the ball in towards the centre. Osako misses the ball before it comes to Josh Sargent, whose shot is blocked just in the nick of time by Max Arnold.

28th minute: Kevin Vogt does well at the other end of the pitch to get in the way of Mehmedi’s close range effort, which was arguably heading for the back of the net.

31st minute: Bargfrede plays a nice ball through to Osako, who finds himself in space at the edge of the area but Koen Casteels does well to deny his curling effort.

39th minute: Eggestein tries his luck from 18 yards after some nice play in the opposition’s penalty area. His shot is blocked by Schlager, which is met by shouts for hand ball however the referee rightly denies them.

45th minute + 1: Half time on the Weser. A good performance by Werder, but no goal yet.

SVW lack the cutting edge

The highlights from the second half:

68th minute: Augustinsson tries his luck from the free kick, but his effort narrowly misses the target.

73rd minute: Schlager manages to work some space in the Werder box after a clever corner routine from Wolfsburg, however his shot has far too much power on it and it flies over the top of the crossbar.

81st minute: Wolfsburg hit the woodwork! It’s Schlager once again, whose effort is much more accurate this time and smacks into the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

82nd minute: 1-0 Wolfsburg. Wout Weghorst. Werder are undone by a quick counter attack. Wolfsburg managed to capitalise on Bittencourt’s misplaced pass, with Weghorst heading home Klaus’ whipped in cross.

88th minute: Great save Pavlenka! The goalkeeper uses his feet to great effect to deny what would have secured the win for the visitors.

90th minute + 5: Full time at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. A bitter defeat for Werder.

Match summary: Werder started the game as the much better side, looking confident in possession and playing at a high tempo in the opposition’s half. VfL squandered the best chance of the half early on into the match, with Jiri Pavlenka denying Weghorst the opener (13’), however SVW also had chances of their own through Josh Sargent and Yuya Osako (24’, 31’). Despite the change in weather, the game continued into the second half in the same vein as the first. SVW were once again the better side and looked assured in defence, up until the 82nd minute. A lack of cutting edge was ultimately Werder’s downfall as Weghorst’s late winner stole all three points for his side.
