SV Werder miss out on the chance to move out of the automatic relegation places. The Green Whites fell to a 3-0 loss in the postponed Matchday 24 fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt. Andre Silva headed the visitors in front in the 61st minute, before the substitute Stefan Ilsanker sealed the victory with a ten-minute brace (81’, 90’).

Line up and formation: Due to the heavy schedule, head coach Florian Kohfeldt made four changes to the side that started the win against Schalke at the weekend. Milot Rashica, Leonardo Bittencourt and Josh Sargent were all dropped to the bench, with Yuya Osako, Fin Bartels (first start for two and a half years) and Davie Selke replacing them in attack. Milos Veljkovic also returned to the side after serving his suspension, taking Sebastian Langkamp’s place in defence.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Vogt, Osako, Selke, Veljkovic, Moisander, Bartels, Gebre Selassie, Klaassen, Friedl and M. Eggestein.

On the bench: Kapino, Augustinsson, Rashica, Bittencourt, Langkamp, Sargent, Groß, Woltemade and Bargfrede.

The highlights from the first half:

15th minute: Davy Klaassen with the first chance of the game. The midfielder hits it sweetly from the edge of the area but Kevin Trapp stretches to push the shot wide for a corner. An intense start to the game sees Martin Hinteregger and Fin Bartels both picking up yellow cards.

23rd minute: Another chance for the Green Whites. Davie Selke runs free from the Frankfurt defence, but Trapp manages to get down to make another impressive save.

38th minute: Controversy in the Frankfurt penalty area. David Abraham appears to have handled the ball away from Davy Klaassen, however VAR judges Klaassen to have been in an offside position and denies the penalty claim.

The highlights from the second half:

61st minute: Goal for Frankfurt. Andre Silva heads in the opener from Filip Kostic’s cross. Kohfeldt reacts by bringing on Milot Rashica and Josh Sargent.

72nd min: Werder are let off the hook, after Mijat Gacinovic dribbles through the Bremen defence before firing a shot narrowly wide of the goal.

81st min: Goal for Frankfurt. Stefan Ilsanker, just seconds after coming on as a substitute, ghosts into the six-yard box and taps into an empty net from a corner. Expertly efficient once more from the visitors.

90th min: 3-0. Ilsanker again. Set piece again. Game over.

Summary: The Green-Whites were fully charged and raring to go on all fronts. It was a heated battle for long spells and though the better chances fell to Kohfeldt’s side, the goals just never came. At the other end, Frankfurt were ice cold with their chances and thus take all three points home. SV Werder will hope to make amends at 15:30 CEST on Sunday, 7th June 2020 with another home match against VfL Wolfsburg.
