Werder Bremen secure their third consecutive away win after a crucial win away at relegation rivals SC Paderborn. The 5-1 win against the team at the bottom of the table is also the biggest win of the season so far for the Green Whites. Goals from Davy Klaassen (20, 39’) and Yuya Osako (34’) crowned what was a dominant first half performance. Maxi Eggestein scored his first goal of the season shortly into the second half as Florian Kohfeldt’s side picked up where they left off (59’). Abdelhamid Sabiri pulled one back a few minutes later however it turned out to be nothing more than a consolation goal for the hosts (66’). Niclas Füllkrug put the icing on the cake in added time as he added a fifth for SVW in his first game back after a nine-month spell on the side-lines due to injury. A last-minute winner for Dortmund against Düsseldorf means that Werder are now level on points with F95 in the playoff position.

Line up and formation: Good news before kick-off: Niclas Füllkrug returns to the squad for the first time since rupturing his cruciate ligament all the way back in September. Florian Kohfeldt makes one change from the side that lined up for the defeat against VfL Wolfsburg last weekend, with Milot Rashica recovering from his minor ankle injury to replace Philipp Bargfrede in the starting XI, who drops to the bench.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Veljkovic, Vogt, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, M. Eggestein, Augustinsson (77’ Friedl), Klaassen (86’ Groß), Osako (77’ Füllkrug), Rashica (59’ Bargfrede), Sargent (77’ Selke)

On the bench: Kapino - Langkamp, Bittencourt, Bartels

The highlights from the first half:

17th minute: Penalty for Werder! Sargent cuts into the penalty area, however the ball jumps up and hit Collins’ outstretched hand on the way through. The referee points to the spot.

19th minute: Zingerle saves from Rashica. The Kosovan steps up to the spot and aims for the bottom left corner, however Zingerle gets down well and manages to make the save and push the ball away from danger.

20th minute: GOOAAALLL! 1-0 Werder! Davy Klaassen! Just a few moments later, Gebre Selassie whips in a menacing ball from the right-hand side, finding Davy Klaassen, who rises highest and heads a looping ball over Zingerle and into the back of the net.

34th minute: GOOAALLLL! 2-0 Werder! Yuya Osako! Rashica and Klaassen combine nicely in the centre of the pitch before finding Josh Sargent at the edge of the area. The American switches the ball onto his left foot and tries to find the far corner. Zingerle manages to make the save but he can only divert it into the path of Yuya Osako who is left with the simple task of tapping it into an empty net.

39th minute: GOOAAALLL! 3-0 Werder! Davy Klaassen! The Dutchman has his second and Werder’s third of the afternoon. Veljkovic heads back Rashica’s free kick into a dangerous area, where Davy Klaassen is poised to strike home the volley from close range.

45th minute + 2: Half time in Paderborn. Werder go into the break with a deserved lead.

Fairy tale for Füllkrug

51st minute: Paderborn have started the second half on the front foot and have looked dangerous in the opening minutes. Werder can breathe a sigh of relief as Michel’s close-range effort hits the inside of the post and travels harmlessly away from goal.

59th minute: GOOAAALLL! 4-0 Werder! Maxi Eggestein! The Green Whites hit back again. Osako sends Klaassen free of the defence down the right-hand side, who slides the ball across to an unmarked Josh Sargent. Zingerle does well to deny the American but Maxi Eggestein is on hand to slam home his first goal of the season.

66th minute: Goal. 4-1. Abdelhamid Sabiri. SVW fail to clear the Paderborn corner and Sabiri is quickest to the ball, who stabs home from close-range.

75th minute: Important stop from Jiri Pavlenka who rushes out from his line to prevent Zolinski from having a one-on-one.

90th minute + 2: GOOOAALLL! 5-1! Niclas Füllkrug! What a moment for Niclas Füllkrug! Marco Friedl puts the striker clean through on goal, who keeps his composure and finishes magnificently with his weaker foot.

90th minute + 4: Full time in Paderborn. A huge win for SVW.

Match summary: Werder set up to attack and managed to do so right from the off. Kohfeldt’s side pressed the opposition high up the pitch and forced them into making mistakes. Rashica’s early penalty miss was quickly made up for by Davy Klaassen, who gave his side the lead with a wonderful looping header (20’). Yuya Osako shortly doubled their lead (34’), despite some uneasy moments for the visitors. Additional goals from Davy Klaassen and Maxi Eggestein all but put the game to bed early into the second half, despite a consolation goal through Sabiri. Niclas Füllkrug then put the cherry on the cake in the final few moments in what was an almost perfect afternoon for SVW.
