Two first-half set pieces mean that Werder have been dealt with their second home defeat of the season, losing 3-0 to the Red Bulls (2-0 at half time).  Willi Orban gave the visitors an early advantage, heading home Christopher Nkunku’s corner (13’), before Marcel Sabitzer doubled their lead with a wonderful free-kick (35’). Despite having a man advantage after Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer was shown a second yellow in the middle of the second half, Bremen were unable to break the visitors down, who sealed the victory through Marcelo Saracchi in the 83rd minute.

Line-up and formation:  Werder’s most recent addition to their injury list is arguably one of their biggest losses, with striker Niclas Füllkrug rupturing his cruciate ligament during training on Friday evening. He joins Yuya Osako on the treatment table, who recently picked up a thigh injury. As a result, Josh Sargent made his return to the side and Benjamin Goller was handed his first ever start for the club. Maximilian Eggestein was declared fit in time for the game, replacing the suspended Nuri Sahin. During the course of the second half, Philipp Bargfrede made his first appearance since March, while Luc Ihorst was also given his Bundesliga debut.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Lang, Gebre Selassie, Groß, Friedl, Bittencourt, J. Eggestein, M. Eggestein, Klaassen, Goller, Sargent

On the bench: Kapino, Rashica, Pizarro, Straudi, Gruev, Ihorst, Bargfrede

The highlights:

3rd minute: Bittencourt runs down the left hand side energetically and plays a one two with Goller before trying his luck, and missing the target.

13th minute: Goal. 1-0 Leipzig. Willi Orban. Completely against the run of play, the guests take the lead. Nkunku whips in a corner from the right-hand side and Orban reacts to it quicker than Gebre Selassie, heading the ball into the far corner.

33rd minute: Phew, close call for SVW: Sabitzer’s blocked shot falls into the path of Nkunku in a dangerous position, but Groß manages to get there ahead of him and clears it out for a corner.

35th minute: Goal. 2-0 Leipzig. Marcel Sabitzer. Another set piece. Sabitzer hits the free kick as cleanly as a whistle and sends it flying into the top left corner.

39th minute: HUGE CHANCE FOR KLAASSEN! Klaassen latches onto Lang’s far-post cross from the right-hand side and manages to beat goalkeeper Gulacsi, but Upamecano makes a great stop on the line.

45th minute: Schiri Stieler blows the half time whistle. The Red Bulls take a 2-0 lead into the break thanks to two set pieces.

49th minute: Werder almost caught out twice. Cunha was only a step too far forward to get on the end of Werner’s pass, while moments before Nkunku missed a free header set up by Sabitzer.

60th minute: Werder fail to clear the ball after Pavlenka saves Werner’s strike, resulting in a goalmouth scramble where, despite having three shots on goal, RBL are unable to add to their tally.

64th minute: Second yellow for Konrad Laimer. The Austrian is sent his marching orders due to a hand ball.

79th minute: The recently substituted Bargfrede cleverly plays in Bittencourt who takes it to the by-line, before Gulacsi manages to get hold of his attempted cutback.

83rd minute: Goal for Leipzig. 3-0. Marcelo Saracchi. Game over. Pavlenka did well to save from Haidara but the ball only falls into the path of Saracchi, who drives the rebound into the bottom-left corner.

90th minute + 2: Final whistle in Bremen. Leipzig take all three points.

Match summary: The Green-Whites played in their own half with a midfield-five, and utilised Leonardo Bittencourt as a left winger who constantly rotated between defensive and offensive duties. Despite having the lion’s share of the possession, the league leaders initially struggled to take the lead. They showed their clinical prowess though, by successfully converting two set pieces. Klaassen was also unlucky to not pull one back.

After half-time Bremen inevitably came forward with more regularity but left themselves exposed defensively and RBL had much more chances in the Bremen penalty area. Laimer’s dismissal in the second half gave Werder a brief second wind, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to make a difference.
