SV Werder fell to a 1-0 defeat against Köln in a sold-out RheinEnergieSTADION on Bundesliga Matchday 17, with Jhon Cordoba scoring the winning goal. The first half turned out to be a hard-fought battle, with limited chances for either side. However, the hosts finally managed to take the lead shortly before half time (39’), with Werder failing to deal with the long ball. The battle continued into the second half, with neither side managing to get control of the game. Despite a late flurry of chances, the visitors were unable to find the back of the net and head into the winter break on the back of another defeat.

Line up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the side that lined up for the disappointing defeat against Mainz during the week. Benjamin Goller replaced the suspended Leonardo Bittencourt, Philipp Bargfrede came in for Nuri Sahin and Marco Friedl was also brought into the starting XI, with Michael Lang taking his place on the bench. SVW set up in a flexible 4-3-3 formation.

Werder's starting XI: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Veljkovic, Moisander, Friedl, M. Eggestein, Bargfrede, Klaassen, Rashica, Osako, Goller

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sahin, Bartels, J. Eggestein, Groß and Woltemade.

The highlights from the first half:

11th minute: The first chance of the game falls to 1. FC Köln. Jakobs receives the ball at the left hand-side of the penalty area after a quickly-taken free kick, before trying to beat Pavlenka at his near post. However Werder’s number one rises to the task and makes the save.

20th minute: The Green Whites almost take the lead through a slice of luck. Augustinsson whips in the corner from the right hand-side which deflects off the knee of Skhiri towards the Köln goal. However, the ball travels narrowly over the crossbar.

39th minute: Goal for 1. FC Köln. 1-0. Jhon Cordoba puts the hosts in front. Czichos hits a long ball over the top of the Werder defence, who fail to deal with it. Instead, Drexler latches onto it before playing in Cordoba, who taps it home leaving Pavlenka helpless.

45th minute + 1: Half time in Köln. Despite falling behind, Werder have defended well so far. However there is a still lot of room for improvement offensively.

Narrowly offside

The highlights from the second half:

53rd minute: SVW earn a free kick in dangerous position after Moisander was held back. Rashica takes...however he can’t beat the wall.

58th minute: Werder with the first chance of the second half. Pavlenka hits a long ball towards Osako, who knocks it down for Milot Rashica. The Kosovan turns on the pace and charges towards the box, taking on Bornauw before releasing a strike on goal. His effort is deflected towards the path of Osako; however the Japan international can’t quite get on the end of it. So close!

82nd minute: Rashica hits the bar! The winger releases a cracking strike from the edge of the area which smacks against the crossbar. Werder are the much better side at the moment!

85th minute: Osako has the ball in the net but the linesman holds his flag up. Pizarro was standing in an offside position during the build-up. Goal disallowed.

90th minute + 4: Horn really wants this clean sheet. Werder continue to raid the Köln penalty area, but Timo Horn makes a fantastic save to deny Niklas Moisander on the volley.

90th minute + 6: That’s it. Köln take the victory.

Match summary: The one positive to take from today was that Werder were much more solid in defence and kept the opposition at bay far better than they have over recent weeks. However, it was a disappointing afternoon for the Green Whites nonetheless after failing to score in yet another defeat. The Hinrunde has now come to a close and Werder will be hoping for much better results when they return after the winter break.
