The Green Whites made a blistering start to the game, with early goals from Josh Sargent (3’) and Davy Klaassen (6’), however Niklas Stark’s headed goal shortly before half time (41’) laid down the foundations for Matheus Cunha to grab the equaliser midway through the second half (60’). Overall it was an entertaining battle between the two sides, involving an overturned penalty decision with the help of VAR.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt was forced into making three changes from the side that lined up for Wednesday’s cup defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. Jiri Pavlenka replaced Stefanos Kapino in goal, while Milos Veljkovic took Ömer Toprak’s place in the heart of the defence; both players missing out due to injury. Josh Sargent was selected to replace Davie Selke in attack, who was unable to play due to the terms of his loan deal.

Werder’s starting XI: Kapino, Augustinsson, Vogt, Veljkovic, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Rashica, Bittencourt, Sargent.

On the bench: Plogmann, Osako, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sahin, J. Eggestein, Friedl, Woltemade and Bargfrede.

The highlights from the first half:

3rd minute: GOOAALLL! Josh Sargent! What a start for Werder! Leonardo Bittencourt plays the ball into the striker after some nice interplay with Gebre Selassie down the right hand side and the American finds the far corner with a fantastic strike on his weaker foot.

6th minute: ANOTHER ONE! Davy Klaassen makes it 2-0! Milot Rashica finds the head of his vice-captain with a delicious ball in and the midfielder nods his side into a 2-0 lead. Werder’s quickest ever 2-0 lead in Bundesliga history!

29th minute: Another good attack from Werder. Sargent and Bittencourt drive the ball forward but the pass towards Maxi Eggestein was just a bit too over hit.

35th minute: Hertha’s first real chance of the game. Cunha hits one from distance but Kapino is there to make a good save.

41st minute: Hertha pull one back. Niklas Stark manages to beat both Kevin Vogt and Niklas Moisander in the air and heads past Kapino to pull one back for the hosts.

The highlights from the second half:

60th minute: Hertha equalise. Kapino initially makes the save from Maximilian Mittelstädt, but the ball falls kindly for Matheus Cunha who smacks home the rebound. The goal has been coming, with the hosts applying increasing pressure.

65th minute: Werder close to regaining the lead! Milos Veljkovic gets a free header inside the penalty area but can’t quite keep the header down and it travels over the crossbar.

74th minute: Another good chance for Werder. Ludwig Augustinsson bombs down the left hand side and whips in the cross, but it’s just too powerful for Josh Sargent and the header travels harmlessly over the bar.

79th minute: Referee Guido Winkmann awards a penalty for Hertha BSC for a hand ball by Niklas Moisander, however VAR overrules the decision.

90th minute + 3: Full time. Both teams were going for the equaliser however it ends 2-2.

Match summary: Werder made a rampant start to the game, however the hosts gradually began to take control of the proceedings and moved further and further into Werder’s half. Hertha continued their pressure into the second half and eventually found the equaliser. Following the goal, the Green Whites had the better of the chances but ultimately failed to find a winner. A home game against Bayer Leverkusen is next up for Florian Kohfeldt’s side, on Monday 16th March (20:30 CET).
