Fight, drama, but no reward. SV Werder fell to a 1-0 loss against FC Bayern Munich despite a largely even affair. Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal of the game shortly before half time (43’) to secure the win for the newly appointed champions. The Green-Whites came close to an equaliser in the final moments, with the visitors down the ten men, however it wasn’t to be in the end.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the side that lined up for the win against Paderborn at the weekend. Leo Bittencourt and Marco Friedl replaced striker Josh Sargent and left back Ludwig Augustinsson in the starting XI. Claudio Pizarro returned to the squad for the first time in five weeks after recovering from injury.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Vogt, Rashica, Osako, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Klaassen, Friedl and M. Eggestein.

On the bench: Kapino, Selke, Füllkrug, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sargent, Bartels, Groß and Bargfrede.

Setback on the brink of half time

The highlights from the first half:

9th minute: First chance of the game for the Green-Whites. Leo Bittencourt finds Gebre Selassie in a good position down the right hand-side, however his cross can only find the side netting.

18th minute: Another good attack from Werder! Davy Klaassen finds Maxi Eggestein deep into Bayern’s half, who tries his luck from just outside the area, however his shot narrowly misses the near post. Keep going, boys!

43rd minute: Goal for Bayern. Werder manage to clear the free kick, however it only goes as far as Jerome Boateng, who picks out an absolute peach of a ball to find Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker makes no mistake and sends the reigning champions into the lead.

Centimetres away from a result

The highlights from the second half:

55th minute: Lewandowski has the ball in the back of the net again but the linesman raises his flag. Müller was standing in an offside position in the build-up. Goal disallowed.

79th minute: Alphonso Davies is sent off for a second yellow. The full back is booked for a tactical foul on Gebre Selassie. Come on, Werder!

81st minute: Pavlenka makes a great save to deny Kingsley Coman, who found himself through on goal. Nine minutes to grab an equaliser here!

90th minute: SO CLOSE! Manuel Neuer denies Yuya Osako with his fingertips. What a save!

90th minute + 5: Full time. Substitutes Niclas Füllkrug and Claudio Pizarro certainly posed a threat right at the death but SVW were unable to find an equaliser. FC Bayern have now secured their 30th Bundesliga title.

Match summary: Werder fought, battled and kept going right up until the final whistle, however, in the end, they couldn’t find that all important goal. Nevertheless, there were positives to take for Florian Kohfeldt’s side. SVW put up a strong fight against a dominant FC Bayern side, who have now been crowned as Bundesliga champions. SVW now have two important games ahead of them as they look to secure their Bundesliga survival.
