Davie Selke made his return to Werder a little over a month ago. He hasn’t fully arrived yet, but maybe it’s because he never really fully left either – at least, that’s how he feels. “I feel really at home here. It was a bit like coming home, there are only minor things that have changed,” the striker said on Monday afternoon in the Mixed Zone. In the Bundesliga, the current situation is similar to what it was five years ago when Selke said his goodbyes. In the DFB-Pokal, Selke can look forward to reaching a personal milestone: for the first time in his career, the striker is taking part in a DFB-Pokal quarterfinal match.

At Werder, Leipzig and, most recently, Hertha, Selke was always knocked out in the round of 16. Now, the striker has the chance to advance into the semi-finals for the first time in his career. With an eye on Wednesday’s match, Selke is thinking back to the DFB-Pokal final nearly two and a half years ago. He attended the match as a spectator with his then-teammates at Hertha in order to watch Bayern München and Eintracht Frankfurt face off. “I saw it live. That was definitely a very special moment,” said the 25-year-old, who would like to achieve something similar at Werder. Picturing “half the Olympiastadion in green and white” not only brings a smile to his lips, but also gives him additional motivation. “That’s something worth fighting for,” he said

Selke: “We showed what’s possible”

That should be the aim for the upcoming league games too. A win in the DFB-Pokal fixture could really give the team some momentum heading into the weekend, although Selke knows that didn’t exactly happen after the Dortmund game. When you think about that great 3-2 win over BVB, you can’t help but think about the five games without a win too. “Even before the Dortmund game, we didn’t know how it was going to go for us, but we showed everyone exactly what we’re capable of. To get a victory like that can only be positive for us, so we want to advance to the next round with a win in Frankfurt.” An attitude like that heading into the game could be vital, as Davie Selke looks to get into the first Pokal semi-final of his career.
