Claudia Pizarro has featured in 779 competitive matches in his career so far (source: transfermarkt.de), and can likely add a few more to that number from his days as a youth player in Peru. Despite a wealth of experience, the striker still found it difficult to find the right words to describe last night’s disappointing 5-0 defeat at home to Mainz. But, he gave it his best shot: “I’ve experienced many difficult situations in my career so far,” Pizarro said. “I know that you can only manage to turn things around once you’ve thoroughly analysed the situation, have fixed the mistakes and work harder than ever before.”

The veteran played a solid 20 minutes on Tuesday evening, and even managed to score, but his goal was disallowed due to a handball. But, Pizarro doesn’t want to linger too long on that moment. “There are several things that we failed to do well last night,” he said the following day. Both the coach and the players had led several discussions about what needed to happen ahead of the home game. After kick-off, however, there was little evidence of that to be found, said the 41-year-old. “Both the loss and our performance are two bitter pills to swallow,” he said.

Pizarro places the blame for the defeat squarely on the shoulders of the team, adding that the team had let head coach Florian Kohfeldt down. “As a team, we played badly and we failed to do our jobs. That’s on us. We have the responsibility to show that we can do better,” Pizarro said. “It was a huge disappointment for every Werder fan. No one could believe what was happening. I feel sorry for the fans. They always show up to support us, and the way we played yesterday was a disgrace.”

In just three days time, the Green-Whites will have a chance to set things right away against Köln. The match against the newly-promoted side (where Pizarro once played), is not only a chance to pick up valuable points in the fight against relegation, but also to back up the head coach. “We all stand by him,” said Pizarro. “That’s certain. We play for him, for ourselves and for the club – for everything that’s important to us. Unfortunately, none of that was visible against Mainz.”
