Ask any journalist, teammate or take a look at his statistics and they’ll all say the same thing: Davy Klaassen is an absolute leader. His role on the pitch has been reinforced since was awarded the captain’s armband, which Klaassen has been wearing to replace an injured Niklas Moisander. However, the added pressure is nothing new for the Dutchman, as he made clear in the Mixed-Zone on Tuesday afternoon.

Klaassen seemed surprised when he was asked a question about whether or not there was any connection between his performances and being awarded the captain’s armband. The 26-year-old is a natural-born leader, regardless of whether he’s wearing the armband or not. According to Klaassen, “Not much has changed in comparison to last season. I always try to maintain the same role on the pitch.”

One thing remains true: Davy Klaassen has attracted plenty of attention over the last few matches. Not only was he a key figure against Frankfurt with two game-changing moments, but Klaassen also led the way by covering nearly 13 kilometres in the match against Dortmund. Not only was that a team-high performance, it also places Klaassen amongst the Bundesliga’s top distance runners. Joshua Kimmich is the only player to have covered more ground than Klaassen this season. However, Klaassen doesn’t place any particular importance on this statistic. “I run for as long as I can, but I prefer when we play well together as a team. If that’s the case, then I automatically have to run less.”

Klaassen is hoping that Werder’s link-up play will be better against Hertha BSC, a team with “similar goals” to Werder. However, Werder have “played well” in their last two matches, which gives Klaassen a “good feeling” ahead of this weekend’s clash. But, the 26-year-old added that the team have not picked up nearly enough points yet. “I’m not satisfied with having taken eight points from seven matches, because there are certain matches that we should have won.” However, that’s no reason for the Green-Whites to give up. “The season is far from over, and we're not far off from the top.” After all, there’s plenty that Werder Bremen and Davy Klaassen can still achieve this season.
