Benjamin Goller has been one of Werder’s surprise packages since the start of the season. The 20-year-old made his first Bundesliga appearance on matchday four and has been featuring regularly since then. Werder’s injury problems have also played their part in his development.

When Florian Kohfeldt made a substitution towards the end Werder’s fourth Bundesliga game of the season, it was clear to a lot of people that he was trying to run down the clock. After all, the game against Union Berlin was tight and his team were just minutes away from a first win of the season. Therefore, Kohfeldt replaced a slightly battered Leonardo Bittencourt with new signing Benjamin Goller. It would be the first of four consecutive appearances for the debutant.

“I didn’t think too much and just tried to play freely,” reflects Goller. These were Bundesliga minutes that the 20-year-old had not expected to be playing after his move from Schalke to Bremen, especially because he was not immune to Werder’s current injury curse. Goller missed the start of the season due to a muscle injury he picked up in pre-season. However, the club’s long list of injuries ensured that he entered the Bundesliga stage sooner than expected. “I came to Bremen hoping to complete pre-season with the team and push on from there. Unfortunately, I got injured at the start but then I was actually able to benefit from our current injury problems.”

However, Werder’s regulars are slowly but surely returning to training and will take their places in the team over the coming weeks. Nevertheless, Goller still wants to assert himself and continue to work on his weaknesses: “I need to bulk up a bit physically. I go to the weights room regularly but it takes some people longer than others,” he says with a laugh.

It is inevitable that the forward will become the focus of public attention at some point but ‘Benni’ is down to earth and is hoping that it will be some time before he reaches this point: “I can run through Bremen like anyone else without being recognised. My goal is not to be famous.” Yet, the U20s international is prepared should stardom arrive sooner than expected.
