There is no doubt that every single player is vital for the Green-Whites at the moment, particularly in defence. Marco Friedl has no problem playing in his less-favoured left back position. “Although I’ve said that I feel a bit more comfortable in the centre of the defence, I’ve also emphasised that I’m not too fussed with what position I play this season. The most important thing is that I’m playing,” explained Friedl.

The 21-year-old only started eight times throughout the whole of last season. Since the summer, however, Friedl has started all five competitive games. Benefitting from the injury to Ludwig Augustinsson, the Austrian has made the left back position his own so far this season. “I feel in great shape and I’m delighted to be playing,” said Friedl.

Friedl: “I’m not worried about it”

Despite a late return to pre-season, his season is well and truly underway. The current injury situation is a great chance for Friedl to put together a strong run of games. However, Friedl emphasises: “I’m not thinking about what will happen when everyone’s back to full fitness. I’m not worried about it.” Instead, he is fully focused on the upcoming games against Leipzig and Dortmund, and how to neutralise their talented attacks, as well as improving his own game.

Against Union Berlin, Friedl was almost exclusively required for his defensive duties. However, he is determined to improve all aspects of his game in the full back position. Both he and Florian Kohfeldt have a clear idea of how to interpret the role. “As a left back you need to show that you’re capable of attacking, as well as defending. Against Augsburg I was much more offensive, even if a few crosses weren’t accurate,” said Friedl.

He won 12 tackles in the last home game - the second highest out of all the players on the pitch. He made five crosses – joint highest with fellow full back Michael Lang. He also managed to provide an assist for Yuya Osako, his first ever assist in the Bundesliga. In the upcoming game at home to RB Leipzig, he will aim to build on his recent performances even further.
