Despite the losses he experienced there, Leonardo Bittencourt looks back fondly on his visits to Union Berlin. “We don’t even need to talk about the atmosphere there. It’s just fun to play in front of that crowd. I’ve been looking forward to this match ever since it was clear that they would be promoted. I’ve been counting the days until we get to go to Berlin,” said Werder’s newest addition, who could also make his debut for Bremen during the away match.

The Leipzig native is pleased that there is once again an East German team taking part in the top flight. Bittencourt had plenty of contact with Union Berlin in his youth. The 25-year-old with Brazilian roots was able to make the jump from the youth academy at Energie Cottbus into the then second-division side’s senior squad, where he regularly faced the Iron Union.

Bittencourt: "It will not be an easy match"

Leonardo Bittencourt answered questions in the Mixed Zone.

Now, Bittencourt is returning to the Köpenick-based club with his new side. The attacker has been training with his new teammates for little over a week now. During a friendly against Hannover 96, he picked up his first assist for the Green-Whites. “You shouldn’t place too much importance on the assist. I’m not completely dialled in yet, but the lads talk a lot with me and help me out,” said Bittencourt, who said he can feel a “familiar and respectful attitude” within the team.

Bittencourt is looking forward to potentially getting to make his debut in the Stadion an der Alten Försterei. “It’s the first-ever Bundesliga season for Union Berlin. The level of adrenaline is extremely high. Here in Bremen, we know how much the fans can help push you forward. This will not be an easy match.” But, Bittencourt also knows that with veteran players such as Nuri Sahin, Claudio Pizarro and captain Niklas Moisander, Werder have “enough players who are used to an atmosphere like that.”
