Niclas Füllkrug’s two goals in Werder’s 4-0 win vs. SD Eibar were eye-catching, especially as the former Hannover man was only on the pitch for around 30 minutes. ‘Lücke’, as he is affectionately known, made no mistake in timing his run to perfection and bundling the ball home twice, much to coach Florian Kohfeldt’s delight.

“He’s shown some good runs, good effort when not in possession and good work tying up loose balls. He’s improving every day,” said Florian Kohfeldt after the game, in an interview with WERDER.TV.

Kohfeldt: “I liked what I saw.”

As Füllkrug spent the majority of last season sidelined due to cartilage damage, he won’t be a candidate for the starting XI at the beginning of the season, as Kohfeldt explained: “His knee is brilliant. He takes part in all our sessions, but we need not say anything more about that. However, he hasn’t played football for seven months now. We don’t expect him to be able to give it 100% on Matchday 1,” added the coach.

After a good pre-season so far, Füllkrug “like today, is ready for 30 minutes or a half of football”. He could potentially get gametime after the sixty minute mark in games like the Pokal opener vs. Atlas Delmenhorst or the start of the Bundesliga season against Fortuna Düsseldorf just one week later. Kohfeldt, however, is putting more importance on the quality rather than the quantity of his appearances. And for his latest appearance, Füllkrug received the greatest possible praise from his coach: “I liked what I saw today.”
