With a two-week international break behind them and a substantial injury list looming, availability was once again the hot topic among journalists at the weekly Werder press conference. Saturday’s home game against Hertha Berlin has been determined as “too soon” for a handful of players. German football’s Peruvian veteran, on the other hand, is fit again, revealed Florian Kohfeldt.

"Piza will be ready," said the head coach: "I expect he will complete the final training session tomorrow and then he’ll be in the squad." The 41-year-old striker was granted a couple of days off to recover. Werder’s internationals have also returned to Osterdeich this week: Josh Sargent has a particularly long journey across the Pond behind him, but will be "well rested for Saturday," according to Florian Kohfeldt, thanks to his routine "anti-jetlag-programme."

The good news ends there as far as injuries are concerned: Niklas Moisander is back in fitness training, but will not be ready to face Hertha. Yuya Osako finds himself in a similar situation: "It looked for a while like he might be ready to return, but our policy is 'better safe than sorry', so he will not be in the squad," explained Kohfeldt, who is also erring on the side of caution with Ömer Toprak after his calf problem reacted negatively to the strain during training. The centre-back is expected to make a return against Leverkusen.
