Good performance, good defending, but still no victory: Despite creating a number of chances and performing well defensively, Werder Bremen only take a point from the game against Hertha BSC. “We played our game a lot better than we did in Frankfurt, which makes it all the more frustrating,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said after the game.

On the match:

Florian Kohfeldt: “It feels like a defeat. We deserved to win, given how the game went. It doesn't make the result feel any better but that’s one of the best performances we’ve had this season. We created lots of chances and had fantastic link-up play. We played our type of football a lot better than we did in Frankfurt, which makes it all the more frustrating. The fact that we created so many chances makes me optimistic because eventually they will go in. We want to pick up more points. We need to fight until the end to make sure we get the results. We certainly have enough quality to do that.”

Marco Friedl: “I think that we were the better side over the course of the 90 minutes, but a 1-0 lead is always risky. We need to take our chances and put the game to bed a lot quicker. Lots of players had chances. I should’ve done better with my chance at the end. After the game everyone was really down. I’d rather play badly and get the three points than play well for 90 minutes and draw 1-1.”

Christian Groß: “It was an even game; both sides had good moments. We found a nice balance, but not for the entire game. We had enough chances to win the game but we should’ve defended better for their goal. Overall it’s a fair result.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “In such a game, you always have to weigh up whether it’s worth taking the risk of losing and going for another goal. We didn’t have the correct balance when they scored their goal. We found it difficult to play through the middle. Of course you want to try and get the second goal, but you also need to make sure that you have enough players in the defence. We needed to score at the start of the second half but we were missing that bit of quality in the final third.”

Jojo Eggestein: “We struggled to make it 2-0. We were still the better team after taking the lead but Lukebakio scored the equalizer with a really good goal.”

Davy Klaassen: “We need to win games like this. We played really well in the first half, and created lots of chances in the second half as well. Then suddenly they scored the equalizer out of nowhere. It’s disappointing.”

Josh Sargent: “We had lots of chances to win the game but we simply didn’t take them. It’s annoying but it makes us even hungrier to start winning.”

Leo Bittencourt: “We deserved the victory a lot more than Hertha did; we gave them a point. We made life difficult for ourselves; we deserved the three points. It’s really disappointing because we played well.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “His legs were dead after an hour but it's not always easy for young players like him. Guys like Claudio are used to having to sleep when and wherever they can. But I am delighted he got some minutes today. Josh has really come on as a player and today he showed just how good of a striker he will be in the future.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “I don't know what they have been doing with Josh but it certainly seems to have helped.”

Davy Klaassen: “Josh did really well to grab a goal today after his trip back from international duty.”

Josh Sargent: “It's been a long week for me - I've had three games. But I'm back in my normal routine again now. We had a lot of chances to win the game but we didn't manage it in the end, which is a shame. We want our finishing to be better next time.”

On the past few weeks:

Florian Kohfeldt: “You have to remember that it’s a long season. However, I’m very disappointed with the result. It was definitely our best performance in weeks. I wasn’t happy with the football we played in Frankfurt. We’ve shown today that we definitely have enough quality to win games. Now we need to build on this.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “If you compare how we played in Frankfurt to how we played today, it’s clear that we improved.”

Leo Bittencourt: “Of course we’re unbeaten in three games now, but no one’s happy with three draws. We really wanted to win today. Now we need to continue working and get ready for a difficult away game next week.”
