Shortly before departing from Bremen Airport to Munich and then onto Grassau, where Werder will spent the next week in their second pre-season training camp, Florian Kohfeldt announced that all of the players “who form the core of our Bundesliga team,” will travel to Bavaria. This includes the injured trio of Philipp Bargfrede, Milos Veljkovic and Sebastian Langkamp. While the latter will have to be patient before returning to full team training towards the end of the second training camp of the summer, Kohfeldt had more positive news regarding longer term absentees Bargfrede and Veljkovic.

Regarding midfielder Philipp Bargfrede, Kohfeldt noted: “He is making huge progress. I’m a long way away from wanting to fuel some high hopes but he will probably start to participate in some running sessions from the start of next week. The operation seems to have gone well for him,” added the Werder head coach. Bargfrede last played for the Green-Whites in March and was expected to be out for the first few competitive matches of the new season. However, Kohfeldt added: “we believe he won’t be out for more than six months.” As soon as the 30 year-old returns to training, the team will have to be careful regarding his workload anyway.

Meanwhile, Sebastian Langkamp is much closer to returning to team training. Plans for the centre-back to return to full team training during the training camp in Grassau are certainly not concrete, however. “During certain heavier workloads, he is still suffering pains meaning that we cannot shape his rehabilitation process in the way in which we wanted,” disclosed the Werder head coach.

Milos Veljkovic also boarded the plane to Munich despite still using crutches and wearing a large grey boot on his right foot. “Purely just a precautionary measure. The boot is coming off in seven days time,” explained Kohfeldt promptly and added more reason for optimism: “He is already back in circulation training and can work conditionally.” The centre-back is aiming to be fit for the opening matchday of the new Bundesliga season.
