SV Werder received some bad news in the opening week of pre season, after it was announced that defensive regulars Milos Veljkovic (broken toe) and Sebastian Langkamp (calf strain) will both be out through injury. The pair will not join the squad in Zillertal, and will remain in Bremen to undergo rehabilitation phases of their respective injuries.

However, Florian Kohfeldt is optimistic about the situation ahead of the trip to Austria. “The injuries are of course not ideal but we will take it and keep going.” The 36 year old does not believe the absences of Veljkovic and Langkamp will affect the standard of training. “We can make up for it with players from the U23s, so I’m not worried,” explained the head coach. In Niklas Wiemann, who joined Werder’s youth team from Schalke 04 this season, and Julian Rieckmann, Werder have two options to fill the centre-back slot.

Kohfeldt is relaxed ahead of the rest of pre season and the start of the competitive games. “It isn’t like they’re out for half a year each. I have full faith in these four. I know that Niklas Moisander, as a leading player, and Marco Friedl can fill in well.” Kohfeldt does not see any great call for action, but says “it would be unprofessional to rule it out.” The head coach is hoping that Sebastian Langkamp can return to team training in Grassau, whilst Milos Veljkovic is set for a longer spell on the sidelines.
