Füllkrug had picked up a serious knee injury in training back in September. Nobody will forget how in pain the striker was. Füllkrug worked his way back though – quicker than expected and has been able to feature again in the 2019/20 season as a result of the corona-enforced break. "A goal like this is earned," the striker said himself. "It was a moment of pure joy for me, because it’s been a long and difficult road. There were moments when I really had to fight."
But last summer’s signing fought through it. And no sooner was it clear that he would be back in the squad than he had the hopes of a Werder side, struggling to score, on his shoulders. The expectation was that Füllkrug’s goals would help the Green-and-White avoid relegation. "I spoke to my wife about it a lot," and it helped him to deal with the pressure. "She knows me and knows what I’m thinking."
Füllkrug certainly lived up to those expectations. "I just wanted to get into the game, cause problems up top and show that I’m back." He did that and more; the goal was just the cherry on top. "It was a perfect day for me."
